We have incredible news to share with the community: legendary game programmer John Carmack will be officially joining the Oculus team as our new Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
John is one of the brightest minds of our generation — pioneer, visionary, and industry legend. There are very few people in the world that can contribute to the Oculus Rift and the future of virtual reality like John can.
John put together a short note for the Oculus community:
“I have fond memories of the development work that led to a lot of great things in modern gaming – the intensity of the first person experience, LAN and internet play, game mods, and so on. Duct taping a strap and hot gluing sensors onto Palmer’s early prototype Rift and writing the code to drive it ranks right up there. Now is a special time. I believe that VR will have a huge impact in the coming years, but everyone working today is a pioneer. The paradigms that everyone will take for granted in the future are being figured out today; probably by people reading this message. It’s certainly not there yet. There is a lot more work to do, and there are problems we don’t even know about that will need to be solved, but I am eager to work on them. It’s going to be awesome!”

Now I'm incredibly conflicted
I think his talents are needed most on Oculus.
Mirror in case of database error.

I'd wait with judging if he's left ID or not however, seeing as he's already building rockets as a second job.
I've written off a lot of gimmicky video game peripherals over the years, but it's pretty hard to ignore this one, considering the level of support it's received, and continues to receive. The experience must really be something noteworthy. I'm pretty stoked to get my hands on one and see for myself!

I tried one during a tech event at the college I was working at and I have to say, it was fucking amazing. The only issue I had was that the frame clamped on my glasses somewhat uncomfortably and since it was a basic test model, the resolution was somewhat iffy, because I could see all the individual screens, but all in all, A+ experience, would use again.

Don't worry doom 4 will come out before hl3.

Imagine having the Hydra, the Rift and sitting in one of those 4d cinema chairs.
I can't wait for the rift to become the standard way of playing games.
Doom 4 was bound to suck ass anyways guys don't worry
Dude's still at ID.

-snip-
ID hasn't made anything good in years anyway so it's not like the man died, he moved on to better things

I got my dev kit yesterday and, even with it's major flaws, the experience it provides is like nothing I've ever tried before. This is one of those rare occasions in consumer technology where people's unequivocal praise is entirely justified.
Good. He's been praising the thing for like, a year now? And "unexplored territory and next gen gaming" is pretty much his area of expertise at this point.
If anyone can convince the ~AAA mainstream~ to make games for the Oculus, or with Oculus support, it's him.
also: looking at that picture, he never changed a bit

smug lil shit
Everyone who has gotten one gushes about how wonderful it is.
It's making it very hard to wait for the consumer model rather than just tossing money at a devkit now.
Wait for the consumer version. The devkit provides a completely new, amazing experience, but for actual gaming purposes it's useless. Played HL2 with it and combine soldiers just ~50m away were basically just blobs of 3x6 pixels that blended into the background - but damn using it was cool, just not practical at all because of the resolution.

Well, if it's any consolation, I think you'd end up regretting not waiting because the dev kit really isn't in any sort of shape to play an entire game with due of the low resolution of the screen. In Half-Life 2 for instance, it's difficult to distinguish enemies more than 20-30m away from the background; a problem that won't exist with the higher resolution smaller screen of the consumer kit.

I mean, if he doesn't have one, who does?
I really, really want this for Arma.
Well Niklas the outlook is good for that, since Bohemia do infact have a Rift in their office.

Horror games.
Hope nothing but the best.
waiting for it to be a 0 latency piece of technological wizardry now
carmack is a genius

I currently use a TrackIR, but depending on how much it costs and how well it functions i might switch.

Didn't he take part in lowering the latency to like 30ms earlier this year? I'm sure he talked about it, but I think he also did some research or something like that.
I'm pretty sure that if there's one person to thank for the lack of pr people emptying their lunch on the showroom floor it's carmack.

This is pretty cool though, I'm looking really forward to the consumer version.
I really want Morrowind or Oblivion modded to support Oculus Rift.
