[b]The problem:[/b] Computer locks up (No bsod, just freezes) and a loud digital static-like sound is emitted from my headset. There seems to be no pattern to when this happens, it might happen when I'm playing a graphics intensive game, or it might happen when I'm doing some internet browsing. The intervals between them also vary wildly, it might not happen for a month or it might happen twice in one day. It's been happening since ~the beginning of summer and since it started happening I've replaced my gpu so I know it's not that. I know it's not specifically one of my 2gb sticks of ram (My friend is currently borrowing it and it's still happening with the one that's still in the computer) so once he returns it I'll swap this one out and see if it stops. I'm also planning on reformatting soon so if that doesn't fix it I know it is a hardware problem and not software. This used to happen to me now and then when my overclock was a little bit too high on my old core2duo rig just in case that helps narrow things down at all.
Hmm, I did unlock the other two cores on my cpu (Both cores were a bust and it was extremely unstable as a quad core with anything more than 1.5ghz), could that have messed the working ones up? [editline]8th December 2010[/editline] Everything is back to default settings now btw. [editline]8th December 2010[/editline] Okay that's the 3rd time it's happened today, after I installed a new 2tb hdd and removed one of my 2gb sticks of ram.
Start with troubleshooting the simple things, ram, PCI-e cards, windows install etc. and see if you find the problem. I'd suggest using the comp for at least 24 hours after you've changed something or until the problem reoccurs before moving on with the troubleshooting, since the problem is so random. And for later, do you have any spare parts so you can try troubleshooting things like the mobo, CPU and PSU? if not, can you borrow from someone?
My windows 7 is OEM so I can't really replace the mobo with a test one, and I don't know about a spare CPU (I'm planning on upgrading to a quad core soon anyway) but I'm sure I could get a spare power supply from a friend.
That's 3 times today (Added to the 3 yesterday), only 2 of them there was no static and it was just frozen. I'm currently on live disk to see if it persists. This is starting to get rather unnerving.
