• 15 Year old electrocuted by the live rail

First of all this happened in my town, Emsworth, Hampshire in the South Coast of England. The train station is only a 5 minute walk from here, anyway I knew this kid, he was from the local secondary school. My friend was the one who saw it (who unfortunately has epilepsy but it's unknown whether he had an epilepsy attack from the accident, he was really sensitive to things going on around him anyway) It's also appeared that the kid died because he dropped his lighter onto the tracks. http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/newshome/Tragic-accident-of-boy-killed.5455234.jp
A teenager electrocuted at a train station was the victim of a tragic accident, police said today. Officers said CCTV footage shows the boy crossing the railway at Emsworth train station to retrieve something that had fallen on to the tracks. Moments later the boy was electrocuted after stepping on a live rail, which was electrified to around 750V, as reported in The News yesterday. Initial reports said the boy was 15 but British Transport Police have since confirmed he was 14 and from Southsea. His next-of-kin have been informed but police have yet to name him. Police said the boy was with a group of friends when the incident happened about 7.50pm on Sunday. Lex Oliver, spokesman for British Transport Police, said: 'The boy appeared to be retrieving something from the tracks when he came into contact with the live rail and was electrocuted. 'Police and ambulance services were called at 7.52pm and emergency medical treatment was given to the boy but he was pronounced dead at the scene. 'At this stage police are treating this incident as a tragic accident and not suspicious.' The boy was killed after touching the third rail, an electrical conductor that runs between the two main tracks. Network Rail said that many people were still unaware that the tracks at many train stations were electrified. The rail operator said many people assumed the tracks were not electrified between platforms. Russell Spink, spokesman for Network Rail, said: 'It's an unfortunate coincidence that this tragic incident took place less than a week after Network Rail launched a new poster campaign highlighting the dangers of trespassing on the railway. 'The third rail might look like a normal piece of track but it carries huge amounts of electricity and is never switched off.' Commuters at Emsworth train station told of their horror over the accident. Kerry Evans, 30, from Cypress Crescent, Lovedean, said: 'I've never heard of anything like that happening before and I've been using this station for about a year now. 'That poor boy.'
Another thing is that it's 750V DC which in comparison to the normal overhead AC current which is 14,000. The way the kid died with 750V He must of died quite a slow death. I'm still asking around, because even though the news covered most of it, you'll never get better information that local.
His parents must be shocked. (User was banned for this post ("News pun" - verynicelady))
Why does a 14 year old boy need a lighter?
Straight in with the puns >.< But yeah, this is but one of the many reasons you don't step out onto the lines kids.
This is why I'm a fan of overhead lines.
it's not even an accident. You should know when the rail has a fucking powerful electric current running through it, he should have asked someone who knew what the fuck they were doing before hopping on and killing himself.

Not such a bright spark. No but to be honest I feel quite sorry for the parents. [editline]01:40AM[/editline]
Why does a 14 year old boy need a lighter?
To smoke...It's cool here. Seriously though like 90% of kids from year 8 (age 13) to year 11 (16 years old) smoke. We love our lungs.
The 750V thing doesn't mean he died a slow death. It isn't the volts that kill you, it is the amperes. Which 100 stops the heart. Sucks, like the article says, I don't think many people know their is a live rail.

Hampshire train station? Is this the one named Ash Rail station? I go through there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Nevermind, another station.

That must have been an electrifying experience. All puns aside. He shouldn't have been trying to retrieve whatever from the tracks in the first place, but I feel bad for him :(.

[editline]09:04PM[/editline] A car battery is usually 550V and it kills in about a quarter of a second when it magically ramps up to enough volts to go through someone.
If this kid watched mythbusters, this would have never happened.
What a dumbfuck.
A truly shocking death.
That's not even funny or original because you had to italicise the word, people aren't that dumb that they can't find the shitty joke in a friggin 4 word sentence jesus

I feel sorry for the guy. Also, the lack of awareness for the danger of those rails is kind of shocking considering, the proximity to the town. This is also probably the worst way to spread the word around.
Watt a shocking story. I wonder if anyone will be charged over this. (User was banned for this post ("News pun." - ventilated))
Goddamnit, on my network too.
His parents must be shocked.
:rimshot:
Watt a shocking story. I wonder if anyone will be charged over this.
:downsrim:
It's really awful when a kid that young dies :(

If you are going to argue then go look up Police tazers that use 50,000Volts.
Why does a 14 year old boy need a lighter?
yea, i think they shuold restrict lighter sales to 18+ only
What a terrible shame. Got a video of it?

Voltage just measures an electrical potential difference. It's the current that kills you.
ITT people act like they know everything about electricity after one year of high school physics and a couple of mythbusters episodes.

Just another way smoking kills. [editline]11:44PM[/editline] Also lol at above avatar
