China's first aircraft carrier has entered into service, the country's Defence Ministry said.
The 300m (990ft) Liaoning - named after the province where it was refitted - is a refurbished Soviet ship purchased from the Ukraine.
China said the vessel, which has undergone extensive sea trials, would increase its capacity to defend state interests.
For now the carrier has no operational aircraft and will be used for training.
The Liaoning was formally handed over to the navy at ceremony attended by top Chinese leaders at Dalian Port, state-run Xinhua news agency said.
The delivery of the aircraft comes at a time when Japan and other countries in the region have expressed concern at China's growing naval strength.
China and Japan are embroiled in a row over disputed islands in the East China Sea. Several South East Asian nations are also at odds with China over overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea.
"Having the aircraft carrier enter the ranks will be of important significance in raising the overall fighting capacity of our nation's navy to a modern level," China's Defence Ministry said in a statement.
The vessel will "increase [China's] capacity to defend, develop its capacity to cooperate on the high seas in dealing with non-traditional security threats and will be effective in defending the interests of state sovereignty, security and development", it added.
Basically they bought some rusting carrier from the Ukraine and refurbished it with "Quality" so now its officially in the Chinese navy.
hope they got a warranty with it
Very nice, I like what they did with the place.
The new curtains are a nice touch, and I like the tiki.

Only if they leave the tag on and don't rip it off
Island depute with Japan... Just finishes refurbishing a carrier, How convenient!

Not a ton they can do with a single air craft carrier. Especially since any provocative military action against Japan means the US would have to start cleaning house.
Not to mention its China.. the worst amount of competence out of any of the large armies excluding North Korea.
Oh god, I read that as "China puts refurbished soviet carrier into space" and nearly lost it.
Its all good, no Chinese space cruisers just yet. :tinfoil:

Oh man, you've been to China?
Wait, what's that? You mean you've trained with them too? Damn, you must have a lot of realistic, uncensored insight into the way they train and oper-
Oh.
I wouldn't call the chinese military incompetent at all.
I said they're the most incompetent out of the bigger armies excluding North Korea. All they have is a numbers advantage.
once again, chernarus making a military statement
oh boy.
I know exactly what you said, thus my reply. How can you even start to know how they operate, what their internal policies are like, or what their state of readiness is? I understand that they don't necessarily have a technological advantage, but we have no idea what their training regiment is like.
Don't pretend like you do. You have this habit of being an armchair soldier who claims to know the quality of any armed force that's the topic at hand.

Did you read what I said or are you just trolling? meh.

I was guessing because they have barely any recent experience in war, they have the Korean War if you count throwing men at 50. machine guns. They have hardly any funding to split over 2.5Mn active soldiers, thus probably lack of general training. They also don't have a tech advantage, otherwise they would have built their own ship.
Back to the topic at hand: Will this mean that the Chinese will lend more towards the international effort against piracy on the high sea?
[editline]25th September 2012[/editline]
Also I'm pretty sure Soviet wave tactics are dead. It is rather weird that they didn't build their own ship, though. What possible reasons could they have for not designing ships of their own? Or building ships of their own? They have nuclear power, and they know damned well how to build a ship, so what's the issue? Was this just a proof of concept?

iCan The Green Recycling Can says: "China is super-awesome for recycling ships other people don't use anymore, there's nothing more cool than saving the environment!"
well said iCan. this is the golden lining in what is otherwise a super-pollution causing country consisting of smog and industry.

The discoball and Caddilac couch seems out of place though.

A very important line.
Not a ton they can do with a single air craft carrier. Especially since any provocative military action against Japan means the US would have to start cleaning house.
Can't fight China. They are nuclear armed with an estimated 20 nuclear armed ICBM's capable of striking the US, and a great many more capable of hitting Japan.
In the event of a nuclear war between the two, Japan would likely be utterly destroyed and the US would be severely crippled. China of course would be wiped completely from the map.
That is a death toll probably in excess of at least one billion, so yeah, nobody is willing to risk that road. Not even a little bit. The US and China going toe to toe would be a very bad day for everyone.

I trained with them.
Well, not really, I just was a special correspondent covering the joint military excercises of Russian and Chinese military. And I have to say that Chinese military out-competent Russian officers by half a continent.
They're strange people, though, I've witnessed strange incidents during preparations - some of the Chinese artillery officers were paying very unsettling attention to some of the outdated (though modified severely) Russian arty pieces we used for training purposes. One of them was even bold enough to try and get into one particular unit - he was then forced to get out and walked away - just like nothing really happened, didn't even say anything. They were themselves very secretive about their own armor and aircraft - I've never had a chance to even get near them.
Then I was asked by my superiors why my report was that "one-sided", right.

What do you mean when you say that one of the officers tried to "get into" a unit?

one of them tried to get into one of the artillery units
one of them tried to get into one of the artillery units
It was all fun and games till they found him splattered over twelve square meters of land during a training exercise.
Not a ton they can do with a single air craft carrier.
Especially one without aircraft :v:
The J-15 is their only aircraft in the works that can take off and land from a carrier, and it won't be introduced until at least 2016.
The point of joint exercises is the opposite of what China is pulling, but they don't care anyway.

Wait.
Why the fuck would anyone attempt to actually insert themselves into an artillery piece?
Also, what do you mean when you say that the artillery officers were paying "very unsettling attention"?
What do you mean when you say that one of the officers tried to "get into" a unit?
I meant, get inside a mobile artillery piece, self-propelled howitzer 2C1 Гвоздика.
Wait.

I must've worded it wrong then. I meant, get inside the crew compartment.
And by "paying unsettling attention" I mean walking around watching the preparation procedures - while not allowing anyone including press near their location. When asked, they would just walk away in silence. Like a fucking aliens, really. Commanding officer forbade anyone from trying to do anyhing with that kind of activity in fear of diplomatic incidents.
God damn it, people, even if I worded it wrong, is it that hard to get that I didn't meant Chinese officers sticking their heads inside the working machinery or in between engine parts?
Also, no jokes about "what was strange about them, did they refuse to drink with your officers or anything?", come on.

I'd think the Russians officers would be better, maybe they were fooling the Chinese? Possibilities since they aren't really allies. I don't understand why they would want to get into some dated Russian mobile arty, weird.

I imagine he means get into the gunners seat, not climb down the barrel.
That is a death toll probably in excess of at least one billion
This I'm unsure about. I don't think so. Maybe a couple hundreds of millions at worst if nuclear weapons detonated in major cities in the US, China and Japan and there was all-out war.
I imagine he means get into the gunners seat, not climb down the barrel.
Alright, I think we need clarification: Did he or did he not attempt to actually climb into the barrel, or the cockpit?
