Summary from Slashdot:
"Don't want to pay Apple $199 to repair the cracked screen of the $199 iPhone you dropped? Neither, apparently, does Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. A patent application made public Thursday lists Bezos as an inventor of 'a system and method for protecting devices from impact damage,' which proposes using airbags, springs, and even a jet propulsion system to keep your iPhones, iPads, and other portable devices safe and out of the clutches of the Genius Bar. Let's hope there's an API — those gas cartridges could be a game-changer for fart apps!"
Well I'm not surprised that it's coming from someone with a face like this:

It sounds like he's taking the piss, airbags? I know that iPhones are expensive and it would seriously suck if you dropped one (my friend actually dropped his outside and broke it), but surely all you need to do is be careful with it and maybe buy one of those plastic case things.
Or people could just stop buying poorly designed phones. I've had the same phone for over 3 years and the worst that's happened is it has some dead pixels on the outer screen now.
But you damned whipper-snappers have this insane desire to play yer Angry Birds 'n yer dag-blasted U-Tubes on the go so you buy a $200-300 piece of glass and wonder why it broke when you dropped it.
Airbags eh?
How about you look after your damn phone.
I'm pretty sure a Nokia 3310 could survive being run over by a truck.
They don't make electronics to last anymore. It's to make people buy new ones.
Also it's Apple, so what do you expect.
I don't know, but that sounds kind of badass.
Throw my iPhone at someone and have an airbag pop out and hit them in the face without damaging my phone.
Safe hands and a solid case, no worries.
I have a gel case on my smartphone. I've had it thrown at the wall pretty hard before (my girlfriend throwing a tantrum) and it survived. I feel like anything too complex is just going to ruin the aesthetic of the phone. What's the point in making it super thin if its just going to have a massive paranoia-easer strapped to it.

The added bulk is comforting and its much more grippy than the plastic back. Too thin will get to be a problem.

And my HTC Desire Z is borderline uncomfortably thin when the keyboard is flipped out.
But a Otterbox designed for it solved that problem.
Also makes it feel and look rugged, which is a bonus for me.

Yeah i agree. I think gel cases and such-like are fine. But an airbag or any of the other proposals mentioned would surely be much more cumbersome.
Well what if you're just minding your own business when suddenly your pants pocket EXPLODES AND PIECES GO FLYING EVERYWHERE, that'd be pretty sweet.
I've had it thrown at the wall pretty hard before (my girlfriend throwing a tantrum) and it survived.
You know, a family member of mine threw her phone into a lit fireplace for the same reason once. It didn't survive. Apple should probably put built-in fire extinguishers in their products. That'd be pretty sweet, too, if it went off accidentally.
lol airbags for phones? Airbags use an explosive charge to blow up the air bag, which would destroy the phone.
Even with a simple compressed air system, it would still cause damage to the phone when the airbag goes off.
A better solution would to not make phones and pocket electronics out of cheap-ass materials and give people what they actually pay for.
What a concept!
We could coat all surfaces with magnets, and make all phone casings the same charge.
Drop a phone and it will just hover along the ground. Might have to chase it a bit.. I'm not sure how friction works when it comes to a hovering object in a magnetic field (I mean air resistance would slow it, but would the interaction with the field itself slow its motion? hmm).
Self destruction button would be better.

You're being sarcastic correct?
My god that would look hilarious. "Whoops I dropp-PANG *flies away and kills someone*"

Magnets, how do they work?
You're being sarcastic correct?
no he is completely serious
idiot
I have never seen anyone drop their phone besides teenagers who get a new phone ever week from daddy anyway.
no he is completely serious

He sounded serious in the last part, no need to call me an idiot.
You know, I think my ZTE Blade will handle falls slightly better than the iPhone considiering it isn't DOUBLE SIDED GLASS. Not that I would know because I can actually keep hold of my phone.

pah i've dropped my iphone 60 times and it never broke
the only time it broke was when i fell on concrete and landed on my iphone and that was just the glass
i don't give a shit about your shitty 3 year phone, bet you can't play tetris in fucking hd can you.

had a REALY old phone here that got ran over by a transport truck, worst that happened to it was the faceplate cracked, and it had customizable faceplates, this is pre smartphone though, hell, it was almost as old as the palm pilot and the older PDAs
Weak ass phones, I left my shitty 50eur phone out in the rain for 2 days and it was still working fine when I found it.

A more important question is "Do I really care if I can play Tetris in HD on a phone I use to communicate with people?"
I have never found myself in a situation where I was like "God damn, I could use some Tetris right now, but my PC is at home. However will I get my Tetris fix? Say... This $300 piece of glass might do the trick! And look! I can move blocks on a screen IN HIGH DEFINITION!"
My phone can send and receive phone calls and texts, which is what a phone should be able to do, and all for the low-low price of $50.

Apple is re-fucking-tarded when it comes to repairs. I made the mistake of buying an iPod and, granted, as a device it's pretty nifty and surprisingly durable. But what happens when the battery refuses to work? I can send it in to get the battery replaced for $150 (which is as much as the stupid thing cost me to begin with) or I can just buy a new one for $150.

you can move blocks and watch porn in HD. i'm not around my computer most of the day so this "piece of glass" is perfect for me.

all that means is that you are a boring person who doesn't know the joys of having kraftwerk as your ringtone
you should
An excellent argument and rebuttal, but it failed to convince me.

I have no reason or desire to play games or watch porn on-the-go. Typically when I'm going somewhere like on a long trip I'm the one driving, and when I reach my destination, I have more to do than play Tetris and watch boobies in HD on a 3" wide screen.
all that means is that you are a boring person who doesn't know the joys of having kraftwerk as your ringtone
Oh yeah, my phone has the ability to use whatever I want as a ringtone, too. Currently it's a string of quotes from "Space Core" in an attempt to make me answer the phone faster just to shut him up.

k but don't be surprised when other people do and find that a crap 50 dollar phone won't work
plus you can't really turn your swag on with a nokia 3210 that would look silly i have a reputation to uphold

I don't give a shit, and I have a smartphone (granted, it's a blackberry). Who gives a fuck if I can play tetris? I just like the texting, the BBM (texting) and making phone calls. That's all I ever use. MAYBE the occasional Facebook, but that's it.
