"Both Barbie and the swimsuit issue have been making women and girls feel inadequate for decades. It's a perfect partnership."
Others took issue with blurring the line between women as objects and actual plastic objects.
"Yes, the swimsuit edition is made up entirely of hypersexualized images of women, but this pairing blurs a new line. Barbie is not a woman, she's an inanimate object. Juxtaposing her alongside real women as though the two are indistinguishable is dehumanizing, and in a literal sense, objectifying," said Nicole Rodgers, editor-in-chief of RoleReboot.org, an online magazine that focuses on culture and gender roles.
It also comes at a time when many are demanding representations of women without airbrushing or photoshop, she said.
"Featuring a plastic doll as an object of admiration and desire feels like a slap in the face," Rodgers said.
Throughout the controversy, Mattel has remained "unapologetic," citing Barbie's 150 careers, her turns in 26 animated movies and partnerships with renowned fashion designers as evidence that you can be "capable and captivating."
But nobody is thinking about Barbie's career trajectory or its positive examples when she's wearing a one-piece in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition, said California State University-Long Beach professor Shira Tarrant, author of "Men Speak Out: Views on Gender, Sex, and Power."
"I would never want to deny anyone love for Barbie," she said, "but my concern is when we use her to present this hyper-sexualized model of beauty."
After all, CEO Barbie and Dr. Barbie weren't the dolls appearing in SI.
"When you look at how the lives of women have changed since the doll originally launched, the choice strikes me as particularly tone deaf in 2014," said Rodgers, of RoleReboot.org. The fact that "the version they want to focus their marketing blitz on is a sexy bikini Barbie tells us something."
i can't seem to understand their reason for why this is horrible, yes we know barbie is fake, yes we know SI is also faked by the amount of photoshop, putting both together doesn't make either one real
Apparently women think the pinnacle of beauty is a plastic doll with a giraffe neck and oversized head with eyes as wide as your mouth.
BAN THIS SICK FILTH

Yeah or maybe people should be less stupid.

Barbies are depicted to be the same height as the male dolls, which if you go by averages would be around 6ft (this also makes sense as female models are usually tall) where as average female height is more like 5ft 5

Action Man taught me that everyone just has plastic underpants, which makes porn a fucking confusion for me. Where do you guys get those bits? All I have down there is smooth, sheeny blue.

You late or something? There's at least 6 others and that's before you factor in the other AIs, like that uplifted dog moderator. I remember when the mods found and deleted DainBramage - they had to make it look like a ban to avoid attracting attention. Good thing we got him when we did - if we hadn't, we'd be fight a racist robot insurgency instead of talking right now.

Little kids don't know.
Reinforcing unrealistic gender norms does real damage to people. That's their reason for this being horrible.

I'm pretty sure this is a joke but either way both suck and should be changed. Girl toys are overly domestic and have unrealistic beauty standards, and boy toys are all violent and have narrow masculine identities
Either way both are limiting and do not accurately depict what most men and most women are like, and that sucks

idk, having played with Rescue Heros, Power Rangers, and wrestling toys I some times feel the influence of toys is a little overstated since I still turned out an overweight pasty nerd.

yeah I think toys are more a symptom than a cause
boys already like heroic actiony shit that's why they want toys that reflect that
girls are already trained to value beauty and style and that's why dress-up dolls get so popular with them.

SCopE5000 stated it better than I could, but toys aren't meant to be realistic. Nobody is going to want to buy a toy that's realistic in that way. Kids want toys that spark their creativity, and "Depressed-Temp-Worker Joe" and "Got-Up-On-A-Saturday-Morning-And-Just-Didn't-Give-Enough-Of-A-Fuck-To-Get-Dressed Barbie" are not the kinds of toys that do that.
ya but who's going to buy a sport's illustrated swimsuit edition for their kid?
I can't tell if you're joking or not. Do you think images of people in swimsuits are the only images that get edited?
SCopE5000 stated it better than I could, but toys aren't meant to be realistic. Nobody is going to want to buy a toy that's realistic in that way. Toys aren't meant to be realistic, but that doesn't mean their scope has to be so narrow. And toys are far from being reflective of standards, they are enforcing them (boys aren't born liking violence and girls aren't born wanting beauty related things). Boy toys don't need violence and girl toys don't need to be domestic, that's what is absurd.
Lego for instance are a great toy. They have a lot of different types of sets, they are fun, and they aren't defining gender standards for boys in an inherently masculine way. Girl Lego toys are not as good (with focus on specific color sets and toy types), but their boy sets are pretty encompassing.
idk, having played with Rescue Rangers, Power Rangers, and wrestling toys I some times feel the influence of toys is a little overstated since I still turned out an overweight pasty nerd.
yeah but it's not about how you turn out to be, it's about how you think you SHOULD be
having a standard for what's pretty and for what's cool won't necessarily make you aim to be pretty or cool, but it'll make you realize whether or not you are either of those things

yeah but then I guess girls get the shorter end since all their stereotypes are actually realistic compared to the obviously fantastical badass action hero shit boys get
