• Source games lagging on laptop

Hello, I have a laptop Compaq Presario CQ50. The problem is that even though this computer should be able to handle source games, "it did before but not anymore". Whenever I start counter-strike source it lags as hell, I can get fps up to 15-20 If I am lucky, on low settings. I cannot understand this. My friend got this old piece of shit laptop and he can run everything on high! and he got like 1 mb of ram and no lag at all! His GPU is shit aswell! So I am asking you, why does nothing lag on his shitty old computer running windows 7, " So am I" but my computer is decent and should be able to handle this. Could this be some kind of driver issue or my gpu "which is very hot btw" Overheated too much and is dying slowly? (That is what I think is wrong). Info: Windows 7. Ram 3GB. Amd Turion Dual Core 2 GHz Direct X 11 from dxdiag. ( says direct x 9c in source games though.) Gpu: Nvidia Geforce 8200m G. 1400 mb Shared memory. 1280 x 800 max resulution. Gpu driver info: Version 8.16.11.8681 Date: 19.08.2009 13:35:00 [editline]09:43PM[/editline] Update: Just discovered my computer is extremly hot in the place where the gpu is located, even when I am not doing anything special. " I know where it's placed since I opened it and cleaned it a while ago, replacing the cooling paste or what it's called, on the processors. Also I use speccy " a temperature program". And It' shows normal temps on the harddrives and such like 30-50 degrees C. But my GPU shows 238 degrees CELSIUS. My conclution, this GPU is Fucked in other words, however if you happend to know anything that can help, please help.
Just to get a couple things straight, the 8200m cannot support Dx11, your friend's laptop has more than 1mb of ram, and his graphics card may be better than yours, bigger number does not mean stronger. The 8200m is an integrated card not made for anything hardware intensive, I wouldn't expect that much from it. List the driver you currently have installed, also use speedfan to confirm the temperature of your graphics card, It wouldn't be above 200c.
I happend to know a bit about computers though, and Yes it does support Dx 11. I know that a bigger number doesn't mean better. And yes my gpu is far better than his. And no the card is not above 200c but it's temp meter is broken cause of the overheating and no software can read the true temp. And I allready listed the driver. It does not support Dx11, what video card does your friend have?
The 8xxx and 9xxx series don't even support 10.1, Just 10. The GeForce 4xx series are the only nVidia to support 11. 5 series for full support for ATI, 3 and 4 for partial support. TL:DR That card doesn't support 11.
Gpu: Nvidia Geforce 8200m G. 1400 mb Shared memory. 1280 x 800 max
With nVidia, the first number isn't as important as the second one. If I recall correctly, 6600 is much better than 8200, for example.
The 8200m has around the same performance as the Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD, a bit less than the Radeon HD 3100 mobile. And even though that card is rubbish, it should play Source games fairly well. Here's what I suggest you to do: Download HWMonitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html Give us a screenshot of the temperatures. If they show up to be fine; download Driver Sweeper, and do a full Nvidia cleanout. (While in safemode, that is). http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/ After this is done, install the newest drivers for your GPU.
Allright I'll try that.
I like how you guys don't believe me when I say that my computer is extremly hot and the temp is 238C. Look here:

That GPU would have been since long fried. I'd still recommend you to clean the dust out of your lappy before you reinstall the drivers. What. Does the CPU IDLE at 65 degrees? Yep. Time for a can of compressed air.
Maybe his GPU is clocking down because it thinks it's overheating? [editline]09:18PM[/editline] Or maybe it is overheating.
No need for compressed air, I completly dissasembled it like 2 months ago and removed all the dust and replaced thermal grease. So I think this gpu is fucked :)
What. Does the CPU IDLE at 65 degrees? Yep. Time for a can of compressed air.
Eh, my cpu idles at 55c on a warm day. now 60-70 since I have ducted heating on. It's an i7 720 though.

It's an i7 720 though.
My i5 750 idles at 35 celsius on a warm day, and around 28 on a cool day. (With warm I mean like, with an ambient temperature of 30 degrees, and with cool I mean 20 degrees). This is with an Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 Rev. 2, though. I assume that you're using the stock Intel cooler, don't. (However, the load temperatures are the most important).
...and replaced thermal grease.
Maybe you did a bad job with that/scratched something? Not doubting your abilities, OP, but just saying...
