"John Smith likes to spend his free time doing something that uses 1.5kWh"
I just don't like the smart meters over here in Australia because they always fuck up and start giving ridiculous charges after power surges and shit.
And it is VERY hard to convince a company that a bill for $20,000 was influenced by a bug and is not actually an excuse to force a person to pay $20,000.

There actually was a Danish case about that last year.
Some family who used to pay $2,700 a year had to pay $36,000.
If it were true, they had to use 110.000 kWh in 4½ month :v: (Which they couldn't even after trying)
And what's the problem with old meters again? They work just fine and they don't carry insane privacy risks.

Because they have to send out people to check the meters.
I don't see the problem either, just pointing out the idiocy.
We recently in new york are pretty much all on smart meters. It's not a big deal and our's don't bug out either. Our energy costs have stayed pretty much the same prior and to now of switching
I believe some smart meters can also give you cool graphs and shit about your usage

Indeed. I love it.
Hours, Days, Months, quarters, years. Water, Energy and cooling(?) (although we don't use that here)

"Great scott! This guy used 1.21 gigawatts in the past hour!"
People who believe that these meters eavesdrop are too fucking paranoid. Sure, it will generate a nice daily power consumption graph for you to see what's probably being used and when but no, it's not logging the serial number on your computer and NO, they do not pose an RFI risk.
I'd totally vouch for one being installed in my place if it wasn't for my roommates and my concern that it will royally buttfuck me over when I leave the PDP-11 on for a week. BC Hydro is currently re-testing all their smart meters after we got a spike in inaccurate readings.
smart-meter readings, unless safeguarded, might also tell criminals when a house was unoccupied.
You know, there was a time when all you had to do was walk down the street at 2AM and if the light wasn't on, you gave it a chance.
