600,000 'not disabled enough' for disability benefit
Around 600,000 people could lose Disability Living Allowance (DLA) - described as “outdated” by ministers - when it is replaced by the new Personal Independence Payment (PIP) on Monday.
The total number of people claiming DLA was 3.2 million last year - a drastic increase from 1.1 million when it was introduced in 1992. The new PIP has tighter controls and a face-to-face assessment for claimants.
Studies by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) estimate that the disability changes alone could save around £2.2billion and lead to 600,000 fewer claimants by 2018.
Campaign groups say disabled people could lose between £20.55 and £131.50 under the new system, which begins for new claimants in parts of the north of England, before being introduced for all new claimants in the rest of the country from June.
The new row will prolong a bitter political battle over the raft of benefit changes introduced this month.
Screw that, gotta provide "value for money for the taxpayer".
I currently get Disability living allowance. I get £82 a month and I get it for having Dyslexia and going to a special needs school for it. I am in my last year of sixth form so I am leaving this year and I was told I might be able to keep getting it when I start college in September.
Who knows I might end up losing it then or before then. I am classed as having the lowest amount given.
You guys are acting like this is entirely to be evil and stop that money from going to those who are blind, crippled, etc.
From the same article:
"At the moment the vast majority of claimants get the benefit for life without any systematic re-assessments and around 50 per cent of decisions are made on the basis of the claim form alone - without any additional corroborating medical evidence."
The impression I'm getting is that some people are trying to collected disability over very minor thing which doesn't affect their work. Tell me if I'm wrong though.
That does happen but not as much as they'd have you believe. Have you heard about the ATOS "assessments"?

I don't disagree that there is a fuck load of people on benefits that don't deserve it. But there's alos many people who don't get what they should be entitled too.
Without going into too much detail, someone i know had their arm amputated a long ass time ago.
Said person has never been entitled to any form of disability allowance because in the eyes of the law they are "Not disabled enough".
the entire system is fucking horseshit as far as I'm concerned.
If they can't physically or mentally work at all then they're disabled.

Why do you need benefits for dyslexia?

Has he been able to work since? If so, where?
I'm curious what sort of work a person with one arm would do
Why do you need benefits for dyslexia?
Is reading not very important where you live?

It's a genuine question, if school/college is provided by the state, what is the money for?

For 40 years, believe it or not a 1 armed person can still do many of the jobs that an able bodied person can do but it requires ALOT more effort and energy that these pencil pushers don't comprehend. As a side note the main issue, is still that employers don't want disabled people because they are not as effective (even with the the law saying they can't discriminate).
This is a good thing. There's a worrying amount of people that claim disability benefits for absolutely no reason. "I've got a bad back." Get a job that doesn't involve any manual labour then. There are people that abuse this and get everything paid for. They get council housing, and even get given a car by the government, when 9 times out of 10 they're perfectly able to work.

Exactly. My friend gets £500 a month for having aspergers and depression. He spends it all on weed and video games.

This, people who can't walk can still work as pretty much every office building has wheelchair accessibility and you don't need legs to sit behind a computer
I don't like how Osborne cut this benefit and now Cameron plans to spend a fuckton to upgrade our nuclear deterrent gj dickheads glad you've got your priorities straight

I get that much every month too but I do almost nothing with it, I feel so guilty spending what was other peoples tax money for some reason, I just don't even feel as though I've earned it even though I am truly entitled to it
Why do you need benefits for dyslexia?
Usually it's not too bad but I've known a few people who had some pretty crippling dyslexia, to the point where they needed people to take notes for them in Uni and shit, it's usually just a funny little thing like seeing dock and reading dick but it is on occasion pretty nasty.
I wish I could get paid for not being able to spell properly...

Spend it all on petrol, alcohol, and cigarettes and feel good knowing you're paying most of it back

My mother is currently in this exact situation. Her back has gone completely, she can't walk more than 2 meters without a pair of crutches or holding onto someone - is on high doses of ketamine and morphine to keep the pain manageable, she's went for 7 operations in her lifetime all of which did nothing but make her situation a whole lot worse.
Now tell me, we live in the middle of the countryside - We refuse the council house that they keep trying to get her to move into and she really wants to go back to nursing because that's all she knows - What is she supposed to do in this situation? She can't go back to work, she's too much of a liability to the hospital, can't work a computer to save herself and is so doped up on drugs all the time she isn't able to drive herself anywhere for fear of crashing the car.
Does that make us the 1 out of 10? The non-leeching minority that actually require assistance?

She obviously isn't part of the "I've got a bad back." category and actually needs assistance.

Now the scary part is...my back is also fucked, it's a genetic flaw that everyone on my mother's side has had for generations. I was told by my GP with the coldest of tones that my back is going to be 10 times worse than hers (when I'm her age) due to the nature of my injuries. I can stand for maybe 30-40 seconds before it becomes unbearable and I have to sit, so that cuts out a ton of work for me until I either risk an operation to fix it or get prescribed enough medication to mask it.
I've been this way for 7 years now with no signs of it getting better, should I get some form of assistance from the government? Because I sure as hell hope I do after the way my doctor was talking to me less than 6 months ago.
However let it be known that I can use a PC and would take up an office job in a heartbeat...however it's not landing the job that's the issue, it's getting myself out there and into the world to find one, not being able to casually stand about or walk anywhere really fucking pisses all over my chips every waking hour of every day...so I stay inside, where I'm not aching and grimacing in pain all the time.
This is where the assistance comes in, because I'm technically not disabled enough to receive any benefits until it becomes worse, to the point of no return kind of worse. I'm still fighting the problem (not giving up yet), doing what I can to try and naturally relieve the pressure on the nerve that's being crushed without high doses of medication...but not giving in is just hurting my family, because I don't get any financial assistance for actively trying to avoid it slipping into a full blown disability.

Well, that explains Roger Mahony's efforts to hide pedophiles, he was doing his best to make sure people judge the Church correctly.
/quoting Catholic leaders as a moral high ground=not good idea
I'm currently getting about £240 a month from DLA for reasons I won't say, and while it's a welcome feeling knowing I have some kind of support in the way of helping give me an independent life, I still feel like shit for getting it for what to me seems like nothing. I feel the amount is ridiculous and people like Wig Wam would deserve it more.
I've known about this move to PIP since I found out my application was accepted (apparently it's made permanent), but I can tell the government are going to try and fuck us all over some way or another.
Is getting onto the UK dole just as easy as hopping on the disability pension in Australia? I swear most of the people on it say they have a cramp in their leg and the government just gives them a fuckload of money to buy on cigarettes
and any sort of reforms that the government tries to put in place causes every housing commision in the country to go cronulla riots style

I seriously don't know, I haven't had any sort of job yet so eh. Something to do with a Job Centre, I think you have to search for jobs there in order to be entitled to it.

Huh, I suppose that's a good way of looking at it

It's a petition for the continuation of disability living allowance, 44k ~ signatures so far, if you don't agree with this change then give it a sign.

Getting on the dole here is simple.
Don't have a job? Go to the job centre. They'll set you up with dole money so long as you actively look for work every day and give them evidence to show this is the case. (Granted this was few years back, may have changed a bit). So long as you're not in full time education and you're unemployed but able to search for work, you get dole money.

Knowing UK and Australia are pretty similar on a lot of things, i thought and i could possibly be wrong that you can be entitled to it but the government sets you up with job interviews that is mandatory to go to so you can get a job and stop leeching off tax payers money

You get a mandatory work placement after a few weeks in some low-end job that the Gov pays to accept people who are on the dole (Pub dishwasher, shelf stacker ect). And after 6-8 weeks of working there, you either get a job working at the place or you'll be shifted onto the next job until something sticks.
Do fat people get disabled benefits there?
