GlobalPost correspondent Tracey Shelton was filming a feature on the daily life of Syrian opposition fighters when a mundane chore for the men turned into a bloodbath.
Shelton camped with the opposition’s Noor Den al-Zenke battalion in their makeshift home on a narrow street in Aleppo. Jokes were being told one morning and laughter was in the air as the men cleaned their post. When an alert came that a Syrian Army tank had been spotted nearby the men dropped their brooms and reached for their weapons.
In an instant, an explosion tore through their ranks. Shelton shot as it happened. Of the men at the post, only one survived the blast.
From left to right: Issa Aiash, 30, father of three, his young brother Ahmed, 17, and Sheihk Mamoud, 42, father of a newborn son, laugh and joke as they clean their post Saturday.

A call comes through that a tank was spotted nearby. The men immediately grab weapons.

Within seconds the tank blast has already hit.

Debris and smoke fill the street around 30 meters back - covering me and the camera in dust.

This man was the only survivor.

He escaped with injuries.

It took several minutes before the dust cleared enough to check for more survivors, but there was nothing we could do.
I believe these are actually stills from a video, but the video has not been released AFAIK
Those are some amazing photos
I don't like how it went from some guys smiling and just simply brushing some stones off the path to one guy left wounded and alone within a few seconds.
Poor guys :(
wow, some of these photos are quite chilling.
Just the fact that this journalist was able to capture such an event so brilliantly and then have it survive, I guess.
I don't know whether to be amazed at the fact that she managed to catch that picture or utterly horrified.
Although reading the first caption makes me feel a hell of a lot more horrifed.
that's an incredible photo. though i'm not sure how i could cope with it if i were there myself; it must take incredible willpower to continue being a correspondent after that.
even though there's a sad story behind these photos, the pictures really are amazing.
my god
To be honest I think these journalists out there are like heroes. I was a fan of Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington, and it really sucks that Tim laid down his life for video and journalism. But someone has to get this information to the public, and these guys are seriously deserving of the valor. Chances are none of us will ever be put into situations like these, and it's amazing that these guys risk their lives to bring it to us. And we still don't even understand it.
That poor office chair
Jesus that one guy is fucking vaporised.
I think it's amazing that we are seeing the very last thing these 3 people ever saw
Oh god, that is just horrifying.
This is one of those photos that will go down in history.
People on Reddit are calling Pulitzer
violence and war are fruitless endeavors; they shouldn't happen in the first place.
it's sickening that we kill each other
Shit; that ordeal of seeing three guys slain by a tank can't have been good for the survivor's psyche.

Is there actually someone you are trying to appeal to here with your shit humour?
After re-reading the article... I'm pretty sure they're just stills from a video.
Christ, it's like something out of a movie, except it's real. It gives you a feeling of disbelief; the belief that they're actually still alive when they're not anymore. It's really hard to believe that they were all just fine and dandy in the first few pictures, then they're covered with sheets and blankets in the next. Really shocking.
Is there actually someone you are trying to appeal to here with your shit humour or are you just intentionally trying to act like a fucking idiot?
Even though I find his joke as tasteless as you do, we both know that under the right circumstances that would've been showered in funnies.
I don't know whether to be amazed at the fact that he managed to catch that picture or utterly horrified.
She, btw.
Tracey Shelton
holy shit
The photograph is absolutely breathtaking, but in a horrible way.
It's so real that it looks kind of fake.
combat correspondents go through a lot of personal risk to do their jobs.
just the other day a Japanese photojournalist was killed in Syria
Don't know about anyone else here, but I find it disturbing that a lifetime of memories and a future can be wiped out in an instant. Fortunately, those guys would have never felt a thing. Lights out.
Thats scary as fuck.. shredded human being being flung into the air.
I thought at first that it was some clever photoshopping since it was taken nearly miliseconds after...then reality kicked in and I'm feeling my sense of mortality.
fuck.
