• Sky Internet - What a piece of crap

I would highly unrecommend using the Sky Internet service in Britain. The broadband, either up nor down, would be extremely good to exceed even the lowest of speeds expected from other providers. Furthermore, the ping that I get in games can vary indefinitely. One day it will be 50, the next it will be 500. It is far from stable, the internet is consistently disconnecting, greeting me with lovely "Client has timed out" messages. Trying to play games on this connection and you will be booted out of the server frequently because of such issues as "Client timed out" or "Ping was above 100". Playing on my own server, based in London, which is not very far away from me, it is still beyond the boundries of slow. It causes lag, which irritates other players and leaves me jumping around the gamemap at unusual intervals. When watching YouTube videos, watching the video at 320p can take 4x the actual length of the video to load which is an agonising amount of time to watch a funny clip that a friend gave you the link to. Watching videos is just the start, attempting to upload videos to YouTube is amazingly good fun. It can take ages. Trying to upload 100mb of video (which is general if you want it to be good quality) can take so long that you might as well keep your computer on overnight to get anywhere near the completion of the upload. Download speeds can fall below 100kb/s at times on any download from practically any site. The only time that I ever get any of the advertised speed that I was told that I would receive is when I first wake up, around 6am. We're paying for 8 megabits and I am strongly considering switching to 'be internet'. It is simply awful. This seems like a bit of a rant. Wait, no, let me rephrase that. This is a MASSIVE rant. However, the only reason that I am going on this entire rant parade is because I really don't want any Facepunchers to fall into the trap of the crap internet. I highly recommend that you never use Sky Internet, unless it is the only option for internet in the area, and even then, don't expect to get any sort of decent speeds that you have been told to expect from the service. Bottom line, I would highly recommend going to a internet provider that is not Sky Internet, due to the fact that the advertised speeds are lies and the internet is beyond unstable.
I had sky and I found it pretty decent apart from being slightly unreliable. I used to get around 500kb/s with sky, but I'm about 14 miles away from the exchange.
:siren:BETHERE OR o2:siren: Unless you can't get be or o2 at your exchange, in which case :siren:YOU'RE FUCKED:siren:
I will get Be. I know that I can get it.
Fucking BT and their ancient DSL :argh: Hopefully getting an upgrade in July. Seriously, I have NEVER gotten above 100kb/s. ever.

However upload speeds leave much to be desired.
Call up Norway, see if they'll run a gigabit fibre line to your house
Be is a good choice
I hear nothing but GOOD about Be, so I would recommend it over Sky. What is o2 like? They keep asking me if I would like it when I ring up about my phone contract but I don't feel like changing to be honest.
Don't worry, Google will save us all soon.
My sky connection is awesome. Low ping, stable. OP, you have an issue with either your telephone line or internal wiring. Test using the engineers socket behind the master plate.
Call up Norway, see if they'll run a gigabit fibre line to your house
Or any scandinavian country for that matter. Also, OP. Try bypassing your router, and see if it helps it somehow. Some routers die completely if they have too many connections at once.
how far are you from your exchange?
I use Virgin Media, get around 13 to 15 Mbps download speed, upload speed is very slow though.
I use Virgin Media, get around 13 to 15 Mbps download speed, upload speed is very slow though.
I really do hate the fact that upload is so slow on Virgin Media, trying to get anything uploaded in any quantity takes forever to do and is generally a pain in the arse. I might as well put it on a stick and drive to whoever I want to give the file to.

Talk talk give a pretty consistent service, 800kb.
You think that Sky is bad? hahahaha. Try going onto BT Internet, you'll be licking the floor to get back onto Sky. But as for ADSL Bethere or 02 are really your only options, or if you can get Virgin Media 50MB
:smugspike:OH englands internet. How it makes me feel like a sad face
My sky connection is awesome. Low ping, stable. OP, you have an issue with either your telephone line or internal wiring. ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 13311 kbps 916 kbps Line Attenuation 29.5 db 17.3 db Noise Margin 8.1 db 8.5 db I get an average ping of 40 on the FPUK TF2 server. I download at an average rate of 1.2MB/s on Steam. You should call up Sky and ask them to see if anything's wrong with your connection.

It is faster than the Sky connection by a long way (1000kb/s down)
99% of people in the UK are using (a)DSL. Welcome to the boat - destination: sea floor
Not adsl, just plain DSL.
Sky are okay I think, The problems I'm having are because BT use fucking really old wiring and cables... Anyways, BT are laying fibre in late 2010 here so hopefully they'll also redo the copper while they're at it so I can get a decent 20+Mb/s
Umm... It rocks for me
My Sky internet also was complete fucking trash, so was their customer service. Now I am on 02 <3

Anything broadband related to CW sucks.
