By the third day of negotiating with his son’s kidnappers, Rasul Amoore had sold his car, withdrawn his bank savings and borrowed money from his siblings and friends to raise funds for the 6-year-old’s release.
Even then he was able to gather only $8,000 of the $50,000 demanded by Ahmed’s captors. The kidnappers eventually dropped their ransom to $20,000 — still more than twice the amount at the disposal of Amoore — after the confectionery shop owner in east Baghdad pleaded that their information about his supposed wealth was untrue.
Amoore, angered and mentally tormented by the kidnappers, decided to gamble with his son’s life.
"Just kill him," said the father of four during a heated telephone negotiation with the lead captor. "Just kill him and I’ll consider that I’ve given his soul as a gift to God."
Four hours later the kidnappers released Ahmed unharmed, but only after receiving $10,000.
Kidnapping has overtaken burglaries, robberies, car theft and other crimes to become the biggest criminal activity in many areas of Baghdad. Insurgents and gangsters are increasingly using abducted children to raise funds for terrorism operations and personal wealth.

This is one hell of a gamble.
What the fuck? Why would you risk your sons life like that?
He knew they wouldn't do it.
It's like those stupid standoffs in movies.
People like that are the scum of the earth.
What I think that I would do is tell them I wouldn't give them anything and tell them just to kill the kid, considering the only reason they're holding the kid is to get a quick sum of cash. That way they would have no leverage or motive to keep the kid. (Which if I read correctly is exactly what the father did)
You're supposed to kidnap people with money.
I hate terrorists
People like that are the scum of the earth
This.
People that do things like kidnapping for money need to set their priorities strait. Taking advantage of someone like that is low.
They probably never had intent to kill the kid, say except if they had to hold him hostage if the police came knocking on their door. No kid = no money.

:raise:
Well... he still had 3 more children.
Emperor Scorpius you need to not make a thread about everything you see on the news.

so then they'd actually kill him?
He knew they wouldn't do it.

He didn't 'know' anything. He gambled and got lucky- Really lucky.
so then they'd actually kill him?
Why would they do that? All they would do is get themselves in deeper shit than they were in before. Plus they wouldn't make any money, they'd just be fucking themselves over.
He didn't 'know' anything. He gambled and got lucky- Really lucky.
what makes you say that?
Oh wow. Does anyone realize that if the kidnappers were Muslim they wouldn't be able to kill the kid. Infantcide is against the teachings of the Quran.
Only in Iraq

Yea that pisses me off too. Kinda sad that he would let his son be murdered because he thinks there's some reward in it.
Why would they do that? All they would do is get themselves in deeper shit than they were in before.
How so?
they both owe each other ice cream
And what sucks about this is that it is only getting worse.
It isn't just the Middle East either. Any impoverished or unstable region has experienced a spike in kidnappings. It is very profitable. In fact it is one of the driving forces behind the resurgence of modern piracy (like the guys off the coast of Somalia). The most valuable thing on any given ship is the crew. Training a new navigator/captain/engineer is incredibly expensive.
How so?
Well unless they managed to dispose of all evidence and stayed anonymous throughout the entire crime they would be either executed or sentenced to life. (Considering it's Iraq probably executed)
Yea that pisses me off too. Kinda sad that he would let his son be murdered because he thinks there's some reward in it.
I'm pretty sure the father was just bluffing, then again it's the middle east we're talking about.
At least he didn't do a 'Benjamin Linus'.
[sp]if you watch lost and remember the episode, you will understand.[/sp]
He didn't 'know' anything. He gambled and got lucky- Really lucky.
I don't think it's that he got lucky, I think it's just the fact that he took the risk that is shocking. But what was he to do? There was NO way for him to pay them the full ransom.
Quick question; if i have a kid that's kidnapped in the US, and I don't have the money, would the police or someone step in and loan me the ransom? Or would I be just SOL if I couldn't get a loan?
Well it sure does seem like the only reason he was willing to let them kill his son was because he had given up hope in finding the money, then decided god would be happy for some reason.
I don't know, this is one of the many reasons I don't like certain religions, they make people's view on sensitive/important issues all fucked up and irrational.
maybe he was asking them to kill him quickly so he wouldn't be tortured. i don't know. what a dick.
maybe he was asking them to kill him quickly so he wouldn't be tortured. i don't know. what a dick.
Yea I didn't think about that. I don't know, I hate news stories with not enough info.
You have the same chance getting your kid back whether you pay or not. Hell, when they get the money they can just kill the kid and run off with the money.
The kid should beat up his dad when he gets back.
You have the same chance getting your kid back whether you pay or not. Hell, when they get the money they can just kill the kid and run off with the money.
Well if they're smart then they return the kid, because then if they plan on kidnapping more in the future there's a reputation of "You're kid will live if you give us the money" instead of "You may or may not lose your loved one, and money".
