As much as I want to original Garrett back, it probably IS too late in development for them to even bother changing anything. Oh well, the game still looks great (from that one trailer at least)
wait so they're gonna have third-person cutscenes then why does thief need this
wait so they're gonna have third-person cutscenes then why does thief need this
To help explain the plot to the player in a cinematic style that allows them to sit back and mainly relax in between all the thievery.
I've never played a Thief game, and that sounds like a really stupid reason.
IMO where most games nowdays have cinematic sequences where you are usually stripped of control anyways, there should be well made cutscenes. For example Skyrim has really shitty "cinematic" sequences sometimes that look really stupid and don't work at worst (Like a meeting with dialogue between many characters or a battle or whatever). Games where you are stripped of control and put on rails, perhaps with quicktime events, actually work better for delivering narration, but why not just make good cutscenes like there used to be in games?

I hope that at least Benny is dubbed by Stephen Russel. Hell, i doubt he's doing to do any acrobatic shit apart from being horribly drunk.
I think I remember a similar statement being made (on Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher? Or was that the v.a. hurt they didn't invite him?) on some other sequel. At that time it had been common consensus it was just some soft public statement so they don't have to disrespect the v.a. by saying "nah he's getting too old for this shit". 'cause come on, voiceacting over different animations is being done perfectly well all the time, Thief's primarily a First Person game and there'll probably be a greater impression left by a great voice actor than somewhat dodgy animation/voice asynch. Especially since the voice has, until now anyway, always been important for giving character to Garrett.
Didn't Deadly Shadows also have third person cutscenes?
IIRC Thief 3 had both pre-rendered and drawn cutscenes and the old titles only mostly drawn ones with some effects like fluidly moving silhouettes played by actors. and pasted against the painted backgrounds. Oh god WHY. I'll be surprised if it doesn't turn out to be a massive disappoint for fans.
The new VA is probably a taffer, though he might surprise us.
I compared the voices, and have no idea how you can pick the old voice over this one.
wait so they're gonna have third-person cutscenes then why does thief need this
Wait a second, why have we forgotten the more likely reason. There'll be a third person mode like there was in Thief 3. That seems like more likely of a reason than cutscenes.
I've never played a Thief game, and that sounds like a really stupid reason.
It is. It's a horrible reason to give up something like this He was just perfect.
I compared the voices, and have no idea how you can pick the old voice over this one.
You kidding me? The new guy just sounds like a generic action hero. Nothing unique about it.
You kidding me? The new guy just sounds like a generic action hero. Nothing unique about it.
Sorry for the matter of opinion, I find Stephen Russels voice in Thief:DS just as generic. Although his Mercer Frey acting was quite something.
