Gamers should expect to see more advertisements on Xbox Live in the time ahead. Microsoft announced this week that its first wave of NUads (short for "natural user-interface ads"), which rolled out during fall 2012, have been highly successful and additional investment in this space is planned.
According to Microsoft, 37 percent of viewers engaged in some way with NUads when prompted with the option to vote. Out of this 37 percent, 71 percent actually voted in a poll. Additionally, 97 percent of those participants saw their vote included in a final tally of votes.
Microsoft general manager of Xbox Live entertainment and advertising Ross Honey claimed the company's NUads have "redefined the 30-second spot." He said that though traditional TV's 30-second spot has not changed much since the 1930s, NUads offer an unprecedented level of consumer engagement.
"These results show that NUads is a real breakthrough in TV advertising, and you can expect more investment from us when it comes to this new ad format and video advertising in general," Honey said in a statement.
Microsoft's NUads launched last year featuring ads from major companies like Subway and Toyota.
Well, not owning an Xbox means I don't know what these ads are like. Are they as obnoxious as they sound?
Well, not owning an Xbox means I don't know what these ads are like. Are they as obnoxious as they sound?
Looking at the home screen for mine right now, about 80% of the main area is advertisements. And the main ad scrolls through different advertisements. Each of the other pages has a similar set up for its advertisements as well. Some of them play videos and have sound. So yeah, its obnoxious.
Exactly what the consumer asked for. Forget about more IPs, ads are all the rage.
Good thing I disconnected before the update that forced this on everyone.
I should cancel my Gold subscription. I only ever use it for Netflix anymore, and I don't really feel like paying Microsoft to funnel more ads onto my TV.
A big success? On what parameters? Gamers love them? Because I dont see where it would be a good thing.
I still don't get why Xbox does this. One of the main things I remember from years ago was MS saying, "Yea, we aren't free, but we don't have ads."
I think they now know people have little choice in the matter.
I never understood the whole thing of placing ads on the home screen unless its like a game or xbox app that they're showing off then fine sure but you should be able to disable them
I worry if they try pulling that shit with windows 8
considering the way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised.
Hahaha, man, you go out and buy the Xbox hardware, you go out and buy the Live membership, and they STILL pipe ads right into your living room. Awesome.
[del]Guys, remember.
It costs MONEY to feed the programmers. Where are they going to get that money from?
Subscription? Nah, that pays the CEO's green fees.[/del]

[SUB]Okay.[/SUB]
So glad I decided against renewing my subscription at the beginning of January.

60 dollars a year
60 dollars a year to pay for ads. It should be free and THEN you're bombarded by ads
Given the choice between the PS3 and 360 today, I don't see how anyone would want to choose 360, let alone subscribe to Gold.
I'm very curious to see what Microsoft has in store for the next Xbox, because it'd take a lot of work to convince me to pick one up.
I really don't understand this. You'd think it would be the PS3 that gets smothered in ADs because it's a free service. Not the other way around.
While I'd understand ads for Silver members (those who don't pay for Gold service), the fact that you're paying 60 dollars (or more for foreigners) a year to have a screenspace completely cluttered with ads.
Anyone else notice the progression of 360 title screen updates that in each iteration gain even more advertisements?

Microsoft shouldn't need ads they're literally filled to the brim with money
Isn't it great. Every other service is free without ads but the Xbox some how gets away with this. Its one of the reasons I stopped supporting microsoft.
I used to prefer Xbox 360 much more, But after all these UI changes and shitting up of Xbox, Im now a bit of a sony fanboy
From my understanding, you already have to pay for Xbox Live, while the similar service of PSN is free. Live has advertisements. PSN doesn't. I honestly could not give less of a shit about Sony, so there's no bias here when I say that Microsoft is full of shit.
Not only that, Playstation Plus gets you more benefits then Live, and alot of the benefits of Live are standard on PS3 (Like Netflix, Youtube, Browsing, Online Gaming). Yet, PS3 has minimal ads thanks to it's simple interface.
If anyone tries to tell me that Gold is worth the asking price, I will laugh in their face.
If I got the choice between access to a ton of "free" games as long as I stay subbed on PS3 or multiplayer/netflix access on xbox for 50 bucks I would go with the free games.
How microsoft gets away with charging money for ONLINE FUCKING MULTIPLAYER baffles me. But that's why I pay for it. So I can play online on 360 exclusives.
And yet PSN stays free, doesn't take away services on a regular basis (unless you count removal of linux but that's more of a console thing than a PSN thing), and doesn't have advertisements plastered everyfuckingwhere on the screen.
I actually like some ads. Especially new games and features highlights and ads that come with little games (there was one about chocolate cookies that had a brawler in it) but yeah, depends on the definition of "ad". I'm gonna be pissed if it clutters more of my dashboard with useless shit or becomes more intrusive "watch this 30 second ad before playing your game".
The XBL fee pays for the multiplayer servers and other crap.
Yet literally every other network like it is free.
Gamespy, Steamworks, PSN, Nintendo Network, All of them have free multiplayer.
(I do understand MMOs doing it, but all those companies have much larger sources of income than MMOs. And even then, a lot of MMOs are pay once to play and just have some microtransactions that don't overly effect gameplay).
halo is like the only game i play on it
without halo xbox is pretty worthless to me so
I don't mind them that much. When I access my xbox I always play my games by selecting the game at the start menu, sometimes I got to the Xbox Live store for demos or new stuff. The advertisement is not really that annoying to me. It even informed me about some games and demos. They kind of clutter the screen but that's due to the design of the menus. I don't really mind that, it's more a news channel of some sorts.
The only thing I'd say that Live has over PSN is the amount of apps it has. I'd love for Sony to secure some of those apps so I can watch Nick or whatever on my PS3.
I wouldn't mind the ads if they were for games and DLC and stuff like that.
I don't much care for car/MCDonalds ads though.
