Leeds Metropolitan University is the fist university to announce it's new fee for 2012 students at £8,500, more than quadrupled the 2006 price of just £2,000. The University has said it faced tough choices and huge cuts in funding, "In the face of huge cuts in government funding we face difficult and tough choices. "We shall continue to secure cost savings but it is essential that we remain able to invest in high quality university education and facilities for our students. "We have a proud history of widening participating and will continue to support access into higher education and ensure that our students are successful at university and after they graduate." So far, the universities of Oxford, Imperial College, Durham, Exeter, Essex, Surrey, Manchester, Warwick, Aston, Birmingham, Lancaster, Cambridge and University College London have said they want to charge the maximum yearly tuition fee, but most of these are the more selective, research-based universities and only a few universities have said they will charge below the maximum. The rise in fees caused huge controversy, where thousands protested and 3 MPs resigned. Nick Clegg commented saying, "I'm not a liar and I do hate to break promises, but I'm not Prime Minister and I don't have all the power, so sometimes I have to make sacrifices" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-12879817 and Look North

Uh, it's about the same price that I would pay for a year of college. And I'm going to a tech college. A semester was about $4000 for me. I think that's right...
Sweden just introduced fees for foreign students. Taking a 3 year Astronomy programme (as an example) will cost outside students £41247, which is 420000 SEK. It's free for Swedes though (hehe)

Ugh. Wonder if this will lead to further protests.
Still much cheaper than any university/college in America. So quit your bitching.
No one cares.
Jesus, don't start this.
It seems to be big news for you all? I know the EU and UK have better funded programs that allow you to not bust your bank for the next 30 years. But 9000GBP is only about $14000USD. Our collleges normally charge that amount (besides community) for 1 semester. And its very common to see private colleges charge $40,000+ a year. Looking forward to cheaper alternatives, like not going to university.
Scotland.

Taking measures that conversely harm people's chances at becoming more knowledgeable are the opposite of what we need. Obviously cuts have to be made somewhere but I think education is one of the worst places possible for them

And you pay less for petrol and pretty much get things cheaper.

So, overall, it works out very similar, if not more.
Still much cheaper than any university/college in America. So quit your bitching.
lolwut? I pay about $2000 a year for school in America. So shut your mouth.
"We have a proud history of widening participating and will continue to support access into higher education and ensure that our students are successful at university and after they graduate." lol
i won't be affected by the fee rises so i don't really care lmao
Yeah, it's not just like the very top tier universities are charging ~9k a year. For example a shithole like the uni of Essex is planning to charge max price (which essentially sets a precedent meaning other crap unis will charge highly as well).
Fucking swedes
Why should swedes taxes go toward foreigners? do you pay taxes like they do ? No, so GTFO
Scotland.
And Wales ...for now. :(
Still much cheaper than any university/college in America. [editline]28th March 2011[/editline]
Why should swedes taxes go toward foreigners? do you pay taxes like they do ? No, so GTFO
I guess you're against giving aid to poor countries too, then.
In Italy all the universities are free, and in the best ones like Pisa Normale you even get paid 5000€ per year to help you buy study material and have some spare cash
lolwut? I pay about $2000 a year for school in America. So shut your mouth.
So you either:

Get scholarships
Got a grant
Goto community college
I don't think it's too unreasonable to make cuts especially in an economic recession since you can just pay any loans back with a better job From what i see a whooooole lotta Brits are going conservative anyway but make hypocrites out of themselves when they argue for lower gas taxes but then turn around and say that uni shouldn't cost money
Ugh. Wonder if this will lead to further protests. No one cares.
No one cares? Well I do. According to google convertor I pay 28,000 euro a year for college. So please, quit your fucking bitching UK.
