Gixmag - Dorin Stefan's 'Floating Observatories' tower; construction begins in 2012 in Taechung, Taiwan
Floating Observatories" is Stefan Dorin's (from Romania) winning entry in the recent Taiwan Tower Conceptual International Competition – and in return for his US$130,000 first prize, now he has to actually build the thing. The new tower, standing more than 300 meters tall with its helium-filled observatory "leaves", will be the crown jewel of Taechung, the third largest city in Taiwan.
Standing somewhere around 390 meters tall, Stefan's "Floating Observatories" features geothermal heating and water heating in the basement, natural ventilation through the "chimney" effect, solar cells and axially mounted wind turbines around the building's core for power, fiber optic lighting for its basements, and a rainwater collection and purification system.
Didn't taiwan already have Taipei 101?
Whoa.
If this is completed, it would be a truly amazing sight to behold.
That looks totally rad like something out of a sci-fi
Wow, why has nobody thought of building something like this until now?
Wow, why has nobody thought of building something like this until now?
Because all the engineers fucking quit when they see the blueprints.
So... wait... will they put people in the helium leaves? Or what? Because thats what it looked like in the pictures, and the article was a bit vague on what the actual purpose of this tower is. Ok, it makes energy and stuff... but is it supposed to be some kind of power plant tower? self sufficient residential tower? Or just some weird observation tower that traps people in helium sacks and has the ability to convert energy?
And then someone drops a pin and 300 people plummet to their deaths.
Nice to see their economy is booming.
Please build this, Taiwan. Please make it awesome. I want it to be the future already.

Ditto! Come on people, stop being so dull and actually create cool looking cars, buildings, etc!
Holy hell!

FUTURE!!!

Alright, if things like this are successfully built, other cities would follow. I live close to New York City and I am still waiting for the day when that dull skyline changes from plain looking skyscrapers to the unique futuristic design that many people imagine. I want to see the sun make the city look beautiful whenever it rises, alongside other things that no one ever seen yet dream to see in the next 30-40 years.
And then suddenly mild winds
That looks like it's up there with the rotating building floors they were going to build in dubai and the japanese building that's supposed to be larger than a fucking mountain
what's with east asian countries and huge mega-buildings that'll never be finished?
star wars
Too bad this'll be leveled in the future when China takes Formosa. IF china takes Formosa.

Unlikely. The current government is at good terms with them
You always see this kind of CGI stuff, but it never becomes reality.
I thought it was going to be a dull looking tower that blimps could dock in, but i like this better, i'd like to live in it.

it's so futuristic it gets sucked into the future
wait about 300 years and ancient shit will pop up

Can you specify the name of said japanese structure?

Except for the fact that relations are still very low, China doesn't accept the existence of the RoC's government, forces trading and diplomatic partners to do the same, and got extremely pissy when we sold them tons of arms?
Cool, too bad blimps are the most useless form of air travel next to hot air balloons
I'm predicting one these blimps go horribly wrong and hundreds of people fall to their deaths

I thought entire cities were supposed to look like this with flying cars buzzing around by 2010.

The Shimizu Mega-City Pyramid. The picture below is a link.

The only problem is that it requires incredibly strong and light materials that don't exist and it's absolutely fucking crazy.
