Screen turns multicoloured then crashes and resets

As the title suggests, sometimes at complete random points, my screen will turn into a fuzzy, multicoloured, blocky mess. And the computer freezes and restarts (but sometimes it doesn't even restart, and it just crashes like that, so i have no other option than to reset it manualy).
At first i thought it may have been a problem with the connection from my monitor to my computer, but i have tried using a different moniter and cable, and it still does the same thing. By the way, the audio is completely fine, its just the screen that messes up.
So then the only conclusion that i came to was a problem with my video card (Nvidia Geforce GTX 280) so i updated my drivers, reset my computer, but it still does the same thing (except it usualy takes a bit longer for it to do it after it has been swiched off for a long time).
So could somebody please identify the problem its really annoying me and i do not want to have to go and buy another video card, as the one that i already have is quite expensive and i have had it for quite a long time.
Please help!
Tl;dr: read the title
I would say to check the temperatures because it sounds like overheating. It's possible the damage has already been done though. How often do you blow out your case?
As a side note, I have a friend that did the same thing to his 280 GTX . I was able to reflow it and it ran fine for a couple months, but because it was put back in a case with poor ventilation, it didn't last.

Ok, ill try taking my graphics card out and give it a good vaccum. Ill also leave the case cover off to let more air to it
Ill tell you if it works so anybody else who has the same problem can try it too.
