Riyadh & Manama Saudi security experts said yesterday the new decision to grant licences to private gun shops for the sale of personal firearms is part of the recent steps to rein in the widespread illegal ownership of handguns and assault weapons from unknown sources.
"The security authorities are keen to put an end to the practice of possessing personal weapons in an illegal manner," Dr Muneef Al Qahtani from the Security Sciences College of Riyadh told Gulf News.
The decision was greeted with mixed reaction from citizens.
"Allowing people to buy guns will help eliminate many societal ills. Now people with criminal intent will think much more carefully before they do anything evil," blogger ‘Desert Liberal' posted on the internet.
Others were more wary of the news.
"Weapons may fall in the hands of young people who in fact need anger management courses. We might have a real social crisis because of widespread sale of weapons," a woman identifying herself as Hanan wrote.
In Bahrain and Kuwait, where the possession of weapons is banned, several people have said that they would strongly be against allowing people to have guns[/release]

Riyadh: Saudis will be able to purchase guns from private shops openly for the first time after the Ministry of Interior said it will license privately owned gun shops.
Any Saudi national aged more than 25 years with no criminal record could apply to open a gun store with a bank guarantee of 500,000 Saudi riyals, the ministry said, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Hunting and sport shooting weapons are currently sold in specialty stores and all weapons have to be licensed. The conditions for carrying firearms include a fresh antecedents certificate and a copy of the civil status card accompanied by three photos, Arab News reported on its website.
There are no official statistics on the number of guns in the kingdom. In July, Riyadh police said they had seized 1,091 weapons and more than 13,200 pieces of ammunition in the capital area in the preceding six months, Arab News said quoting a Saudi Gazette report.
Last week, the ministry also said it would accept applications from Saudis to set up private shooting clubs.

Their logic is impeccable. By legalizing things, they will no longer be illegal! :pseudo:
So the stores are going to try and outsell illegal gun dealers?
I realize that in countrys where weapons arent legalized or are very difficult to get, the illegal weapon traffic skyrockets (because if people want a gun, they will get it by any means) and weapon crime rises too?
Edit: The advantage of easy gun licenses is that if someone comites a crime with that weapon, its easy to track down the owner. Something hard to do if its a illegal weapon.
Sounds good, I like that idea. Makes guns less rebellious to own.

yea i don't even?
This is similar to people wanting drugs legalized here in the US. I think that if it can be done right, it will work relatively well.
People need to defend themselves.
It's better that the law-abiding honest citizen can now own a gun in Saudi Arabia.
Well, this way, they can regulate and profit from firearm sales.
Plus, law-abiding citizens will now have a chance to defend themselves from any crazy motherfuckers they may cross paths with.

dumb
Makes sense actually. If it legalized they gain control for the most part.
Like America and weed. If they legalize that they can stop all the drug deals with it and can even tax it for money.

How is that an auction for an antique gun?
He's sitting in the street with a BB gun damnit, the only one paying attention is a fat kid next to him.

That's what America has been doing since 1776 :patriot:
This does nothing but make it easier to get guns.
Makes sense
This does nothing but make it easier to get guns.
People who stick to the law didn't buy guns, thus becoming easy targets to those who got them illegally. Now, they can still stick to the law, and have some protection.
Just think, would you want to fuck with anyone if you knew that EVERYONE had a gun?
Sure there would still be some gun crimes, but the rates would no doubt fall dramatically.

And make it easier to track those people who get guns.

It's missing a few gears.

that might be a logical argument except for the fact that America has a higher per-capita murder rate than India and almost all of Europe, who have very strict anti-gun laws.
The majority of firearms in America were legally owned at one point in time, but they were stolen from their law-abiding owners or were unwittingly sold to people who intended to use them in crime. Legalized gun ownership drastically increases the number of illegally owned guns in a country.
yep and we have more murder than India and almost all of Europe
The ability to own a gun is under the Bill of Rights. It's a right to bear arms.
