• China seizes US Navy underwater drone in international waters of South China Sea
The Pentagon says a Chinese warship has seized a US Navy underwater drone collecting unclassified data in international waters in the South China Sea. The incident has prompted a formal demarche from the United States and a demand for its return, a US defense official said. It is the first such seizure in recent memory and took took place on 15 December northwest of Subic Bay, just as the USNS Bowditch – an oceanographic survey ship – was about to retrieve the vehicle, the official told Reuters. “The UUV was lawfully conducting a military survey in the waters of the South China Sea,” the official said. “It’s a sovereign immune vessel, clearly marked in English not to be removed from the water – that it was US property.” Navy Captain Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, says the US is asking for the drone's return. Captain Davis says a civilian US Navy ship operated by the military's Sealift Command was recovering two of the unmanned gliders about 50 miles northwest of Subic Bay near the Philippines when the Chinese ship approached and took one of the small vessels. He says the Chinese ship acknowledged radio messages from the U.S. ship, but did not respond to demands the glider be returned. The Chinese have acknowledged the demarche but not responded to it.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/china-seize-us-navy-underwater-vehicle-south-china-sea-one-china-taiwan-a7480016.html
fuck em, let's send a few booby trapped drones into those waters and then see if they still fuck with em
equip them with explosive ordinance, when you can't account for them, blow them up
equip them with explosive ordinance, when you can't account for them, blow them up
yea lets start a war fuck em
to be fair, we'd do the same to their shit if it was mucking around near our spots
to be fair, we'd do the same to their shit if it was mucking around near our spots
hopefully not if it was international waters. it's not like this was right off the coast of china, this is in the south china sea which is by international law not chinese territory.
Holy fuck. And here was me thinking it was Trump who was gonna start WW3.
Holy fuck. And here was me thinking it was Trump who was gonna start WW3.
yeah, this china shit is really starting to resemble pre-wwii japan
yea lets start a war fuck em
not enough to do any real damage, but enough to destroy the innards of the drone loved that snarky tone tho
Bring that drone home. It's not right for them to keep it from its family
It's weird, I know that logically they could exist, but I never really thought about underwater drones before.
yea lets start a war fuck em
their fault for fucking with them then
Yes, sending automated devices armed with explosives into international waters is a fantastic idea where nothing could go wrong. [sp]/s in case anyone can't tell[/sp]
China is definitely in the wrong though, according to the Law of the Sea Convention, assuming my professor taught it right, China has 0 ways to legally claim all they do.
China's going to keep pushing to see what they can get away with, as they always do when a new president takes office. Hopefully dealing with someone as unpredictable as Trump doesn't backfire this time and fuck things up for the world.
Bring that drone home.
Yes, sending automated devices armed with explosives into international waters is a fantastic idea where nothing could go wrong. [sp]/s in case anyone can't tell[/sp]
That's pretty much what China is doing right now, but with artificial islands. If anything it's safer than doing so on land or in the air because most of the sea is pretty empty.

[sp]/s in case anyone can't tell[/sp]
what the fuck do you think flying drones are ? they are weapons platforms that are currently flying over sovereign airspace, with real missiles. what is only installing a small charge to render the drone inoperative, so that they can't reverse engineer it? what is so crazy about that?
It's an oceanographic research drone. Explosives have no place on it. [editline]16th December 2016[/editline] It's not like making underwater drones is difficult. [editline]16th December 2016[/editline] The data is unclassified data about international waters, too. Not exactly a loss worth a skirmish.
fuck em, let's send a few booby trapped drones into those waters and then see if they still fuck with em
Ah yes, explosives. Because the true American solution is to throw bombs at a problem and hope that it goes away. Anyways, anyone know what the drone might look like?
used for "scientific" reasons....
hopefully not if it was international waters. it's not like this was right off the coast of china, this is in the south china sea which is by international law not chinese territory.
"Bullshit, Joe! It even has 'China' in the name, it's totally ours!"
international waters, they are completely in their rights.
international waters, they are completely in their rights.
They'll say the exact same thing when their scientific equipment is found operating just outside of your international lines as well and you guys will freak out and say that's bullshit. Also China has no concept of international boundaries. Unless met with force it all belongs to them.
drones can fly underwater? that's incredible. we should be sending boeings under the sea as well (so there's no danger of them crashing into the clouds)
It's too late US, the drone is already on its way to a factory in the mainland to be cloned for a fraction of the price.
fuck em, let's send a few booby trapped drones into those waters and then see if they still fuck with em
yeah fuck em semper fi oorah fuck em hooah
