[release]The intervention came at the culmination of a firefight that ended Col Gaddafi’s control of the Zawiyah facility, which lies just 30 miles west of the Libyan capital Tripoli.
Pro-Gaddafi forces had taken to the sea by boat after fighting a desperate rearguard battle for the refinery, the regime’s last source of fuel for its besieged capital.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said they had commandeered a tug in an effort to regroup after a Nato strike destroyed their armed vehicles in the refinery.
“Although a challenging target, small and under way at sea, a direct hit was scored with a laser-guided Paveway bomb which sank the vessel,” Major Gen Nick Pope said.
The RAF delivered the final blow just as two senior officers boarded the ship from an inflatable.[/release]

Last three are from Daily Mail. Watch out.
Those brave, brave laser guided missiles.
Those brave, brave laser guided missiles.
May they rest in pieces..
Is that a Eurofighter Typhoon? It's so beautiful.
Modern Paveways have a CEP of something like 3 feet. Drop a pair of them, and you are going to hit whatever you lazed.
See? That's why we have the best trained pilots in the world!!11!!
They sure can press the 'auto-aim' button well.

So you think it would be a better option to go all out manual on an object so small?
if they miss they have wasted valuable ammo....

I can see your joke detector isn't laser guided.
Was trying to figure out why the hell they were dropping bombs on ships instead of hitting them with air to surface missiles.
Turns out the Eurofighter can't currently equip anything other than bombs and a cruise missile.
Lovely variety of air to air ordinance, but it hasn't received the upgrades necessary to deploy any real air to surface missiles.
Oops. :o

Lasing shit is the future maaan.
The M1 Abrams has the same system. The crew would shoot a laser at a series of targets ahead of them and with a punch of a button their turret is able to automatically swivel and acquire the target. The computers will also take into account the speed in where their tank is going and the speed their target is also going so the cannon would automatically compensate for this by 'leading' the target with it's gun. Once the first target is destroyed, you can smack the button again the turret will aim at the next priority target
I suppose they could have strafed the target. A 27mm cannon is nothing to sneeze at.
EDIT: Wait, I'm not even certain they would be trained to strafe stuff.
Delta wings have difficult to predict stall conditions. Canards mitigate the danger, but if you fail to heed the warning provided by the canards stalling, then you stall in a fashion that you can't pull out of easily.
Dammit I like the Eurofighter. I have got to stop reading about this.

I laughed so hard when it said "evil tugboat".
We must all build a monument in the glory of these fallen missiles.

Gunfox, we get you know lots of military shit. Ok, I think you're just talking to yourself now.

Lasing has already been the norm for quite a while now.

I can't say for today's M1A2 models, but the older M1A1 and M1 (the U.S. Army still does have lots of M1A1s in their inventory) did *not* have that autotracking capability.

It seems that the UK ones aren't meant to be doing its A2G role for a few more years so they haven't been fully upgraded.
I bet there's piles of ordnance sitting around just begging to be carried on them.

Agreed, the tankers still had to line up their shots during Desert Storm.

If you're upset about those, you'd die as an American.

when you say strafe, I think you're thinking of the A-10, which would have sunk that tug with its gun.
when you say strafe, I think you're thinking of the A-10, which would have sunk that tug with its gun.
You can strafe with any plane that has a cannon on it, and the a-10 is used mostly for a anti-tank roll. Not so much strafing ships.
sensationalist headline if ive ever seen one
