Hell Yeah!
Google was already doing this, just not through the Play store

USA only.
I'll stick with my S2 LTE.
So does unlocked mean the same as rooted or?

Unlocked = unbranded
No carrier or anything to taint the device.
Once I secure some income, this may be an option because I am sure as hell not signing up for any contract-based service, seeing how they have fucked over everyone I know with locked-in upgrades, data plans, et cetera.
I have an acquaintance who's brother died and the carrier will not allow his family to void the contract or cancel the large data plan without paying exorbitant fees.
USA only.
Why do they do this.. It's like the Kindle Fire still isn't available over in the UK, yet it's been out in America for at least 6 months now?
I want a nexus for $400, it costs almost $600 where I live.

But if it was registered on brother's name there's nothing they can do. Can't sue a dead man.
If you don't mind contracts, Amazon is offering the 4G LTE version of this phone for Verizon for only $50

Nice, my HTC phone I bought came loaded with crap (3 facebook clients, 2 twitters clients, etc.) and had been preloaded with a bunch of crap by the provider (none of which worked, lead to 404 errors half the time). More companies need to sell these devices that aren't locked to one provider and come with a clean OS image, or just enforce rules like Apple does with the iPhone.

Different places use subtly different implementations of tech standards. Like Telstra here have an LTE network, but it won't work with US LTE devices since they use a different frequency (Which is why people got upset with Apple)
Can I buy it and make tracfone the carrier?
So wait, there's no monthly fee? That's the major thing that keeps me from getting a cell/smartphone is the price of the phone and contract being more than I can afford.

It was on the family plan, unfortunately.

Apparently you can root it and unlock the bootloader for custom ROMs and OC (read reviews). Shame its US only and the price without contract is too high.
Im happy with my Sony Xperia Neo I got as a gift. ITs fully unlocked and I put on ICS.

Then they're right after all. A contract is a contract.

If you don't pay, don't they just fuck with your credit rating? Don't think he would mind
edit: fook nvm
Eh, I got one on Amazon a few weeks ago for $460. The GSM one that is.
But I'm ok with it, because mine was imported from Poland so the box and instruction manual are written in Polish. And it came with a European wall charger. It's bitchin'

It's not as much branding as simlocking. You can have an unlocked but branded phone or an unbranded simlocked phone.
It basically means that you can put in any SIM and it will accept it.

It's contract free. Means you use whatever plan you already have. Be it either prepaid or something else.
I bet it's US only, it's always US only, it fucking sucks. Companies should do it world wide, they'd be getting more customers and i'm sure people wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for P&P.
I have a LG Optimus Q from Net10 with the $50 a month unlimited everything plan. So if I bought this phone, I simply take the sim card out of my LG, shove it in this, and that's all?
Edit: Never mind, apparently my phone doesn't have a sim card. ):
Luckily, my carrier doesn't really add anything to my phone, it just came like any unmodified Galaxy Nexus would. Prices are shit though to be honest, been thinking of switching to Bell or Verizon once this contract is up.
