• Best OS to be booted of a flash drive?

Hi Facepunch! I'm getting a 16GB flash drive for my birthday, and I was wondering, what is the most suitable OS to be booted from a USB flash drive? Linux, well obviously, but which distro? I need it to be fast and usable....And not least, have big harware support. Thanks! :buddy:
16GB is stacks of space, so just grab Ubuntu and roll w/ it

Maybe on a desktop, but you're not going to be storing all your music collection, etc. on a portable OS install

Windows 7 Ultimate. Fits like a glove. 16GB for 32bit, 20GB for 64bit.
Windows 7 Ultimate. Fits like a glove. 16GB for 32bit, 20GB for 64bit.
How many people have flash drives like that lying around?
How many people have flash drives like that lying around?
The OP... Did you even read the thread at all?
The OP has a 16GB one. Might as well have something huge with hardly anything on it.
How many people have flash drives like that lying around?
OP does, if you'd read it. Oh fuck me, ninjas.
Hexxeh's Chrome OS.
Waste of a 16GB stick. CrOS requires about 2GB, IIRC

Just doing it "because you can" has always been the worst and dumbest of ways. SLAX og SliTaz. Both are GREAT and works just the way you'd expect from such a system. And they're very space efficient. SLAX = ~200MiB SliTaz = ~30MiB Oh, and you can completely customize your SLAX livecd from the website, deciding just what packages you'll need/want!
Linux, I don't use it but from what i understand it runs on USB devices.
Waste of a 16GB stick. CrOS requires about 2GB, IIRC
2 GB partition for CrOS, 14 GB partition to the rest.
The OP... Did you even read the thread at all?
Yes I did. But will it actually have 16 GB available? Same goes for Ipods, HDD's and the like. It won't actually have 16 gigs available, maybe around 15 or so. Trying to put a 16 gig OS on it doesn't leave much room for other things, if any.

Many people these days think that more complexity (and therefore more data) means more efficient, which clearly isn't the case.
Could I install Arch on a 4GB Flash Drive?
Could I install Arch on a 4GB Flash Drive?
yea [editline]10th November 2010[/editline] iirc arch takes up like ~700MB of hdd space
Woah, didn't expect so many responses.... The thing is, if we say I install Ubuntu on it, I want two partitions: One for the OS and one for other stuff. The one for the other stuff should be a format like FAT32 or the like (So I can use it within any OS I might plug the flash drive into, including the one there's on it. I also want it to be fast...Would Ubuntu be a good choice? How much space does Ubuntu require?

Oh, btw the flash drive read speed is ~20MB/s and the write speed is ~18MB/s How fast is a normal HDD?
i686
Windows 7 Ultimate. Fits like a glove. 16GB for 32bit, 20GB for 64bit.
You can't boot Windows 7 from a USB stick.
You can't boot Windows 7 from a USB stick.
Yea, I also got confused when he said that. Also, I want to have some space left, and it would probably be very slow.
Go with Arch. It's small, and awesome.
