I think the first line from the article captures things perfectly:
I think I’m right in saying that we all often worry about how Minecraft could possibly make any money. The poor folks at Mojang must be starving, freezing and wearing each other’s skin as thermal underwear by now. How many more developers must die before Notch comes up with a business model for his absurd, costly vanity project?
Wow
good thing I didn't even buy this game and had someone gift it to me...
On the other hand I bet he feels bad right now.
a paid monthly subscription service which allows the easy creation of private, controlled servers.

This isn't any subscription for actual gameplay. It's a server purchase sort of thing like how you can buy private BF3 servers on consoles.
Can people please read the OP before they comment on this? The title is misleading, they're introducing official private servers that'll cost about $10 to $15 dollars a month. It's only so parents can run their own servers without having to use a middleman and knowing that their kids are safe as long as they keep paying.
seems like an ok idea .
I see nothing wrong with this.
What's the problem with this? I don't understand why people get so upset
parents can run their own servers
can't they already?
What's the problem with this? I don't understand why people get so upset
Idiots overreact because they don't even bother reading down.
BAAAD title. Very bad title
This would be fine if it was just an alternative to hosting a server on your own computer.
[editline]ah[/editline]
I meant to say I hope they don't make it the only option in future games.
Bad title, good idea. Will prevent a lot of kids getting scammed. May just be me,but I always overhear kids on my school messaging eachother ''Yeh,I like, bought dis Minecraft (xDDD creeperz) server from this guy. On paypal yeah yeah and he didnt give me the server now I lost my money :CCCCXCCsadface EXDEE''

There's a massive group of incredibly strange people on facepunch who will hate anything as soon as it gets popular, even things they like. Minecraft is now more popular than Jesus so I mean it's high up on the hit list :v:
This would fit well in sensationalist headlines.
I'd be cool with being able to set up my own server, eases on the hassle of having to go through a third party.

Because someone who isn't Valve is making money ;_;
Read the article before you rate dumb.
glad to have you back RPSbot
The big question is how many slots you get for that money, and what access you have to customize it.
can't they already?
Of course they can, but this will likely have an attractive and simple UI to make it really clear and basic for a server to get set up. Thus, non-tech savvy parents can put up servers for the kiddlywinks without excess effort and feel secure about it (for my aforementioned point in my last post).
Didn't they once propose to make listen servers a thing (host a server from your game client, that goes down when you close your game or exit the world)?
Also this whole ~Realms~ idea seems silly. Once you drop all the cloud-floating talk, this is just Mojang hosted servers and hopefully a decent server browser.

Its just when it gets popular with stupid people.
What's to stop assholes from going on the servers anyways, other then the fact that parents would have to monitor it constantly whenever their kid plays?
And from a parental viewpoint (I'm not a parent, but still), having to pay monthly to keep my kid safe playing a game is bullshit.

pretty sure you have to specifically give invites for people to join

You mean like a normal listen server?
Dunno about this, seems easy enough just to get my mate to pop on his own server, then again I guess it isn't really 24/7.

It must be so hard for you to be so much smarter than everyone else in your generation!
I see nothing wrong with this really.
And here I was thinking realms was just them finally integrating the server software into the actual game
