I think the U series is pretty much as good as it's gonna get
and 27in cinema displays are $1000, what are you talking about

That's because Apple's monitors are like lights.
Dell Ultrasharp 27" is probably your best bet

Agree with this, I have the Dell 2707, the new one you have linked to is amazing, one of the best panels around.

What does he actually use his computer for to warrant two 30" monitors?

Of course its $1000. Its in the damn Apple store.
I am using a dell 21" 1680x1050 monitor from 2004 and it still runs like champ
In my opinion dell has always made good monitors
If your planning on gaming the u2711 is bad. Like REALLY bad. The input lag is awful.
God dammit. Well I may be getting the U3011.
I'm sure it wont be as bad as that, you would probably adapt to it after awhile.
Damn, looks like I wont be able to beat the Apple Cinema Display. But I'm happy with the 27" mostly for the size. Thanks guys. Appreciate it.
On another note, a guy I work with just bought his second 30", the new Dell u3011. He's waiting for it to arrive but jeez, two 30 inches together, it's just madness.
The Dell U2711 is by far one of the best monitors you can buy and is considerably better than Apple's new Cinema Display 30" which is supposed to be their flagship. The only reason you're thinking that is because Apple doesn't give a shit about color reproduction, they just want it to look pretty. The U2711 is better, period. Oh and Apple screens use glossy finishes which is just god-awful for color reproduction.

Every monitor as sharp, clean & premium as an Apple Cinema Display is going to cost around $1000.

Have you looked at the HP2710m? It's a 27inch 1080p monitor, with 92% color gamut, I've used one, and it's FANTASTIC, there about 320 dollars on the HP website.
