It's a puzzling tax, cutting against many of the basic assumptions of the web, but the broader implications could be even more unsettling. Cloud services are built to be universal: Netflix works the same anywhere in the US, and except for rights constraints, you could extend that to the entire world. But many taxes are local — and as streaming services swallow up more and more of the world's entertainment, that could be a serious problem. Although the tax is technically levied on consumers, some companies are already preparing to collect it as part of the monthly bill. Netflix says it’s already making arrangements to add the tax to the cost charged to its Chicago customers. "Jurisdictions around the world, including the US, are trying to figure out ways to tax online services," said a Netflix representative, reached by The Verge. "This is one approach."
http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/1/8876817/chicago-cloud-tax-online-streaming-sales-netflix-spotify fellow chicagoans let us riot in the streets and moan at our aldermans!
Suddenly VPN users skyrocket and half the population of Chicago, Illinois appears to be watching Netflix from Houston, Texas.
Aiden Pearce won't have any trouble getting around this
Sounds like Chicago
Fuck this state, it's already annoying being taxed for buying things on amazon and steam.
vrroooop that was the sound of any high tech industries that don't have their servers on site all packing up and leaving chicago
Chicago is a great city and all but politically and financially it's an absolute mess. You can probably say that for the entirety of Illinois but that's because it all stems from the corrupt shithole that is Chicago. The business that I work for is moving out of Cook county because of the obscene taxes being levied on businesses there and instead opting to go over to Will or DuPage. Everyone is kind of being pushed out of the city because of things like this. I doubt it'd go full Detroit but people are getting sick of all the dumb shit that Chicago pulls.
