Going to start this, and move it from http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1078662-Parents-won-t-let-me-get-a-.22-rifle?p=29167051&viewfull=1#post29167051 as it's getting further off topic.
You know, a battleaxe is more easily controlled due to it's longer shaft, making it actually a bit more ideal to a beginner. A greatsword on the otherhand only has that semi-short hilt. It's shaft is just a bit longer than a normal longsword's and therefore already requires knowledge of how a heavy blade moves in the air accodring to your hand movements. Battleaxes give you a bit of ease in training that movement and once you become proficient with axes you can try greatswords. That's how I was taught to do it, anyway.
I've heard it's much easier to use because of those provided reasons. Where abouts do you live? I'm intrigued that you've had training in it.
I've practiced Kendo for 1.5 years which taught me some general basics. From there on I started studying medieval warfare and combat tactics used at that time for each weapon. Then I just pieced together the info I had and started learning. Not that it's perfect or anything, my combat style is far from perfect. I have little to no concern for defensive capabilities, I just try to make the foe succumb as quick as possible with brute and relentless strikes. And yeah, that was my experience with the whole battleaxe/greatsword thing. Your feeling might vary, it kind of depends on your former training if you had any and your personality.
Greatswords are really easy to control tbh. [editline]14th April 2011[/editline] More so than single-handers because of the extra leverage and strength you get using two hands as opposed to one. Someone who knows what they're doing would take you out in a second.
Don't you use completely different fighitng patterns when using a greataxe and a greatsword? A greataxe uses long sweeping motions trying to hit your opponent from a distance. A greatsword's tip is to fragile for those kind of swings. And greatswords have severall postures for different situation, a battleaxe doesn't. I advice you to start with something basic, try training with apropriate sized sticks before actually deciding for the weapon you want. The greataxe or greatsword might not suit your style of fighting at all, and then it'd be wasted money.
Personally I'd rather learn to use a quarterstaff and then a spear following that. I prefer the attack motions to the great-sword and axe.
Halberd mother fucker

One thing I learned back when I was back in sword school was that the first 4 inches from the tip have most cutting power. After that it gets a lot duller. So you just want to stay out of your enemy's reach while keeping him in yours. The advantage between a greatsword and a spear is that with a spear you're literally restricted to attacking with the tip. With a greatsword you have a bigger area on your weapon to damage with. Spear uses thrusts, greatsword uses swings. So depending on how long the sword actually is and from what direction you swing it from, it's far from fragile. Also, offense is the greatest defense. As well as a dodge or two.

To be fair, I think it's an equal fight. You have much more control with a spear also.

Also the fact it's the biggest weapon I happen to own.
My brother gave me a steel claymore for my birthday, shit's sick. When I'm bored I also throw my throwing knives at a wooden target board, I've got down getting the tip to stick but my accuracy isn't the best yet.

I'm cool with it tho. Archery and melee skills are enough fun for me. Speaking of archers, am I the only one who can spend hours just shooting a bow? I've got a shortbow and a compound, use both depending on the mood.
Warhammers. Who cares about armor when you can smash through it.
Battlehorse and a 2 hand greataxe.
Shillelagh.
