New Wonder Drug that potentially stops Cancer entering human trials in 2014
Stanford researchers are on track to begin human trials of a potentially potent new weapon against cancer, and would-be participants are flooding in following the Post’s initial report on the discovery.
The progress comes just two months after the groundbreaking study by Dr Irv Weissman, who developed an antibody that breaks down a cancer's defense mechanisms in the body.
A protein called CD47 tells the body not to "eat" the cancer, but the antibody developed by Dr Weissman blocks CD47 and frees up immune cells called macrophages — which can then engulf the deadly cells.

The new research shows the miraculous macrophages effectively act as intelligence gatherers for the body, pointing out cancerous cells to cancer-fighting "killer T" cells.
The T cells then "learn" to hunt down and attack the cancer, the researchers claim.
“It was completely unexpected that CD8+ T (killer T) cells would be mobilized when macrophages engulfed the cancer cells in the presence of CD47-blocking antibodies,” said MD/PhD student Diane Tseng, who works with Dr. Weissman.
I thought it would be important to not give false hope in the title, as it's hard to directly say it fully works on humans if the trials haven't started yet
That's great news given it just doesn't disappear like most of these news we see about curing cancer, but it will be too late for my aunt :(
And it'll never be heard of again, like the 6 or 7 thousand other wonder drugs, cures and medical breakthroughs. It's getting harder and harder to be excited about stuff like this when it just vanishes into thin air soon after being announced...

jesus christ you people are predictable. Trials take a long time, why do you struggle to understand this?

lol you do realize testing takes a VERY long time?
Plus, pessimism like that is just annoying and unfitting. Somethings going to actually come out some day, and then you'll look even dumber.

at least he's not saying "corporations cancel drugs like this because they make too much money on pseudo cures"
Trials can take up to 20 years, the only way to be saved by one of these wonder cures today is if you offer yourself as a guinea pig, which could go both ways really, but if you're going to die, might as well go down fighting.

maybe...
All of the groundbreaking cancer research drugs that go in to testing end up turning patients in to zombies, and they have to quarantine the government labs to avoid a breakout.
No wonder we never hear of them again.

Real life is not the Get-a-life mod.
Cancer will probably be cured within this decade.

I really hope so, a lot of the members in my family are being diagnosed with cancer, no one should have to go through the pain of having cancer as the treatment is horrible.
Cancer will probably be cured within this decade.
cancer will never be cured, it will only be treated and symptomatically-dealt with

No, just, no. It's a nice thought- I'm not saying that it's bad to be optimistic about a 'cure' for cancer. But cancer is a small word for a huge number of individual diseases, and one drug, or one group of treatments, or whatever, isn't going to suddenly knock out a part of our biology.
I recommend watching this video, and other videos from this channel, as a bit of a primer on the subject of research/general science. He's experienced, he does his best to be unbiased, and most importantly- he cites his sources.

The nation's top scholars are working around the clock to figure it out, no results yet.
It's sad to know that most people with later stage cancer won't benefit from this drug, but good that in the future it's possible cancer will be reduced to almost nonexistent levels
Booya, now I don't have to quit smoking anyways.
Guess it's time to smoke more cigarettes
Too late for my foster mom, let's just hope this works for others then.
I really hope to see cancer get defeated during my lifetime.
Speaking of cancer cures, does anybody know if there are trials going on for photon beam treatment? My mother was recently diagnosed with a cancer and give 6 months to live. Right now the doctors say all we can do is treat her for pain, and I'd love some good news or trials that are available to the public.
photon beam treatment? isn't that just radiotherapy?
Cancer will probably be cured within this decade.
What happens to all the Cancer Charities then?
photon beam treatment? isn't that just radiotherapy?
Sounds like a method that involves laying your chest over a crt monitor

You should look into this - depending on the complexity of her illness, these have been proven to be pretty damn effective.
It is still radiation therapy, but it is a more complex approach rather than blasting the whole area with illness-causing chemicals and radiation levels.
My mom has cancer, so this shit better work.

I think you really need to calm down. I've had family members suffer through cancer for the last 13 years or so. In fact most recently my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and basically given 1 year to live at the outset. What I'm getting at here is that because we're really open to alternatives that don't involve just cutting parts of your body off and calling it a day, we have always researched and investigated all sorts of alternative treatments.
In the last 10 years alone we have come across probably 5 or 6 bonafide confirmed 'cures' for many types of cancer, and most of them are completely unrecognised by any health care system or doctors that specialise in the field, and most of them have been around since as early as the late 80's. J!NX, there's a bloody good reason why I'm pessimistic and it's not from a spectators point of view - we've been jumping through god knows how many hoops to try and track down and actually GET some of these 'new' treatments and have basically been fucked over by the government and healthcare system every step of the way. In fact, the only way we could get enough money to travel to another country and pay to get my mum one of these 'wonder drugs' (that actually work and have been for more years than I care to count) was to get the doctors to sign off on her health insurance death payout early.
If you haven't had to dig through all of the shit that's out there in these matters, you really have no clue just how much bullshit is involved with the healthcare system shunning these drugs and treatments that actually work because they can't make money off of it. Yes, I said it, they can't make money off these treatments so they shut them down, it's really as simple as that. I can't possibly begin to explain how much we had to go through before this point became as clear as day, and the people we visited in other countries were all fighting the very same battles.
The healthcare system is fucked and it's just letting so many people die needlessly... my mother was nearly one of them but thanks to some honest to god miracles, she's still here. No surgery, no 'mainstream treatment' that the doctors were trying to FORCE us to take. I don't know what I expect you to take from what I'm saying here as I could write a whole book on the topic just from our perspective, but I don't think half of YOU realise WHY these things take a very long time in 'testing' and WHY they never wind up eventuating. You literally would not believe the kind of money and kickbacks that change hands with regards to typical cancer surgery and chemotherapy.
It's a mindblowing fuckup of an industry, and I hope to never be involved with it ever again.
My girlfriend's Gran recently had a lump removed from her abdomen (or somewhere around there) and is now on some form of chemo therapy in the form of pills which is supposed to not allow the near-cancerous lump to come back. It's had something like a 90% success rate but it's still being tested and she has to make reports of the effect of the drug as well as getting check ups for review. So far it's been pretty good though.
Only problem with the drug though is that it costs $10,000 per month, so yeah that's a fucking lot. The amazing thing though is that Medicare (Australia's health care system) is paying for all of it.
It's great to see further advancements in cancer research and prevention, once it's affordable though it's be even better.
[editline]13th July 2013[/editline]
Just to make clear, the medication she is on only prevents the cancer from returning, once it's affected organs and cannot be removed, then it wont work. Hopefully the drug in the article will do a better job of actually eradicating the cancer.

This is genuinely the most insane statement I have ever seen on facepunch. I actually.. yeah. I'm out of this section. See you Monday.
