Speaking to the BBC, Fry said it was "probably not realistic to call for a move or a boycott at this stage in terms of it achieving its objective".
He added: "But I think it is realistic to call for it and to create moments like this where people think really hard."
Fry called on athletes attending to make a symbolic protest, suggesting it could be a gesture such as crossing their hands in front of their chest, which he went on to demonstrate.
He said: "It's inevitable it will happen, but I hope people will agree with me that all our athletes and all the athletes in the Games should find a symbol whether during the performance of their piece or at the end of it.... and definitely on the medal podium."
That's nice and all but it won't do anything.
I don't know why, but this heavily reminds me of Jesse Owens.

Standing up to a regime that rides upon bigotry and hatred. Of course, they're no Nazis, but nonetheless.
Thank God it's not a fist, people would get the wrong idea.
stephen fry, the hero we all need!!
That's nice and all but it won't do anything.
it does a lot more than apathy lol

Depends where the fist is going.
it does a lot more than apathy lol
Apathy? lmao, I agree that Russia is wrong but doing this at the olympics isnt going to do anything other than say "we disagree with u". sorry.
But if after the olympics russia suddenly changes their standing, then sure
That's nice and all but it won't do anything.
Russia might start arresting international athletes and tourists for making the gesture
Then it'd do something
I know it is now impossible, but I am a heavy supporter of SFry's boycott. I'm straight, don't get me wrong, but I strongly believe thet the LGBT community should have exactly the same rights. Who gives a fuck anyway who that are going out with, I don't and nor do any of the people I know. I have a Bisexual friend, and she/he is the quirkiest, funniest, most interesting person I've eve met.
Sorry about the he/she, they were born female, but currently a guy, so to speak. we were stopped outside our school gates a while ago, and the guy said "Morning Gents". She was completely filled with joy he called us "gents". I completely understand why.
Something she taught me as well, Sex and Gender are different things.
Sex: What you were born as, and you biologically are, i.e. Male/Female
Gender: What you choose to be. This can be different from sex.
My friend is:
Sex: Female
Gender: Male
And I will support her, no matter what.

Then that person is a he, not a she/he.

Often I don' know how to describe him. I usually call him by his first name, but I don't want to reveal that online. Because reasons.

I understand what you're saying and I understand you just weren't really considering your choice of words but try not to say choose. It's more like sex is physical, gender is psychological or societal. You don't choose to have gender dysphoria.
I'm all for people being allowed to live and believe what they want, but I stay way the hell away from conversations about transgenderism and the like. I'm not gay or transgender, so I'll never be able to empathize with someone's situation and so will never escape the fear that I'm wronging them.

It's because he's not wearing a suit.
Or shaven.

Only not nearly as impactful.

As nice an idea as this is, i'm not entirely sure supporting gay rights in Russia when the bill doesn't just include gay people, but people who support gay rights get arrested is a good idea, at least when it's possible you could get thrown in jail for it.

Make it a limp wrist instead
Some people are gonna be crossing their arms and huddling up to stay warm and they'll get assaulted.

Not really, even if they arrest some US citizens, we just ask for them back. Probably no effect at all.

If the olympic games are going to be sullied by this bullshit, I say boycott it. It totally ruins the purpose of the games anyway, so why go/watch/support it?
The symbol should be index fingers touching
The symbol should be index fingers touching
And for females it will be the middle and index fingers intersecting. Lets make this happen.
It should be the invisible BJ sign and for ladies a crotch rub.
