Rochester, Minn. (CBS ATLANTA) –Researchers find that nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug, and more than half receive at least two prescriptions. Mayo Clinic researchers report that antibiotics, antidepressants and painkiller opioids are the most common prescriptions given to Americans. Twenty percent of U.S. patients were also found to be on five or more prescription medications. The study is uncovering valuable information to the researchers about U.S. prescription practices. “Often when people talk about health conditions they’re talking about chronic conditions such as heart disease or diabetes,” Dr. St. Sauver stated in a Mayo Clinic press release. “However, the second most common prescription was for antidepressants — that suggests mental health is a huge issue and is something we should focus on. And the third most common drugs were opioids, which is a bit concerning considering their addicting nature.” Nearly one in four women ages 50-64 were found to be on an antidepressant, with 13 percent of the overall population also on antidepressants. Seventeen percent of people in the study were being prescribed antibiotics, and 13 percent were on painkilling opioids. OP, might want to snip out some of that news post, you're not supposed to copy the whole article.
Doesn't surprise me at all, doctors are drug dealers cashing in, more times than not.
Antibiotics for all, lols
Doesn't surprise me at all, doctors are drug dealers cashing in, more times than not.
I've seen the opposite. Assholes refuse to give out any drugs unless you come in with your torso missing some limbs. I went into the ER for a tooth abscess. I had 2 days to go before the Dentist could see me, I was already in the worst pain I've ever been in for the last week, and it just got too much to bare, so I went to the ER. I said look, give me something to kill this pain for just a couple days. Half my face was swollen, too. They gave me a shot of Marcaine which is like longer lasting Novacane, which didn't numb me completely up, then gave me 2 pills of TYLENOL No Oxy or Hydro, fucking TYLENOL Fuck this state, man Oh yeah, I was in the ER, which was completely empty, for 10 minutes, and that cost me $600 The Dentist gave me a root canal on the spot when I got there and gave me 2 weeks worth of Hydrocodone and even right after the root canal, it was nothing as far as pain goes, didn't take or need them. I was in such bad pain that right after the root canal I considered it pain relief
Serves you right. Drop the "fuck this state" mentality. The E in ER, is emergency. Do you honestly think you were having an emergency? Go to your own GP, or a minor-emergency next time, cheaper, similar treatment plan, and overall quicker on average
Stop eating so god damned many antibiotics and what have you.
not me

I wonder what would happen if all the prescription drugs in the world just disappear overnight.
I wonder what would happen if all the prescription drugs in the world just disappear overnight.
People would start dying rather quickly of infections, for a start. People with long-term conditions would start dropping e.g. HIV+ people taking ARVs, diabetics taking insulin. Those taking medication for psychological issues would see a resurgence of symptoms e.g. those taking anti-psychotics having hallucinations returning.
I wonder what would happen if all the prescription drugs in the world just disappear overnight.
The first four days would be outright hell on Earth. Afterwards you would see a steady increase of mortality related to injuries, as well as see people trying to figure out the recipes for such drugs again, or pushing for regulation regarding drugs like heroin, cocaine, and marijuana.
I rarely ever take prescription drugs. I don't really have allergies nor any diseases. But whenever I get sick I just get some Mucinex and that shit works wonders on my congestion. Praise Mucinex.

What the fuck. I can understand that a lot of people need them to live, but 70%? The fact that I am the minority on this is disturbing, either there are a lot of unhealthy people, or there are a lot of "unhealthy" people. I would probably say both actually. I am not saying people should get of pills and such that would make their lives way easier and even save their lives, it's just weird to me that 70% of Americans need them.
My girlfriend needs to take injections and meds all the time to live and I take blood pressure and allergy meds everyday. The number does seem a bit high but I don't think it should come as a shock.
I only take Nexium because of my acid reflux. Either we're really unhealthy or doctors want money, more likely both.
im surprised there's less talk on how many fucking anti-depressants and ADHD scripts are being thrown at little kids.

70% seems silly high to me. Here in England the only person off the top of my head I know of that has any prescriptions is my mum and that's for her thyroid. Some people do get prescriptions for the smallest and silliest of things however.
I wonder what would happen if all the prescription drugs in the world just disappear overnight.
A lot of people would die.
I am the 30%! I don't even take aspirin.

Our family doctors & dentists literally throw them around like it's candy.
heaven forbid we use the technology we've created to improve and save lives
There are more responsible ways of going about it though.
I've only take cold medicine and stuff when needed, but I know that a lot of people out their take medication daily. The statistic isn't too surprising.
I use cold medicine to get super stoned v:v:v
When people use anti-biotics for cold symptoms they should be secretly replaced with cyanide.
