WASHINGTON — Congressional leaders on Thursday reached a deal to extend by four years several statutes that expanded the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s counterterrorism and surveillance powers after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, aides said.

Times Topic: USA Patriot Act
Under the deal, two sections of the so-called USA Patriot Act and a third provision from a related intelligence law would be extended, without any changes, until June 1, 2015. The provisions had been set to expire later this month.
The sections allow investigators to get “roving wiretap” court orders allowing them to follow terrorism suspects who switch phone numbers or providers; to get orders allowing them to seize “any tangible things” relevant to a security investigation, like a business’s customer records; and to get national-security wiretap orders against noncitizen suspects who are not believed to be connected to any foreign power.
Some lawmakers had proposed tightening the circumstances when the F.B.I. could use the surveillance powers. Others — including the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont — had proposed requiring greater auditing and public reporting about their use.
this feels appropriate
It's pretty pathetic that the Democrats and Republicans in the Congress can only agree on the most fucked up ideas.
[release]O! say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
’Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation.
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust;”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave![12][/release]
whelp
Well piss.
@Gaza
Oh yes, I remember in history books about how we declared independence and actually had to use our force to preserve our freedom. We haven't done that in years.
Makes me feel like I don't care. I've basically grown up with it, and I don't even notice anything. And I've never had a problem with the TSA, I've only had them search my bag once, and that's probably because I was holding onto it like a baby since I was cold and didn't have a jacket.
I thought Obama was going to end this?
When you run on an inspirational slogan like change and then piss over all your promises, it's a special kind of fucked up.
Bin Laden is getting the last laugh. He stated in many of his interviews that his intentions were to bankrupt the US. In order for the US to move past this, they have to stop spending all this money on security and wars. The extension of the Patriot Act would not be doing so and is exactly what Bin Laden would be wanting us to do.

Nope, he asked for it.
[release]The Obama administration asked Congress to renew the provisions[/release]
Seriously America are you fucking kidding me? That act is fucking killing your nation.

So by continuing this, the Obama Administration are helping Terrorists?
Yeah, this is a pretty terrible idea. But, on the other hand, parts of the Patriot act are already fairly common. Look at Google Ads, the ones that display while you read your email. Those ads are targeted at you because of words you used in your email. It's a simply word filter. The same methodology is used by the government in their surveillance of your email. And yes, if they see something they don't like, it does get more advanced.

Terrorists are IRL trolls, when you get worked up, you lose.

Oh yes, If america continues spending the money they don't have on 2 useless wars, they will go bankrupt and then when the terrorists do attack, they are fucked.
So by continuing this, the Obama Administration are helping Terrorists?
Not helping the terrorists, but the Obama Administration is doing exactly what Bin Laden wanted them to do. The Bush Administration also did exactly what Bin Laden wanted them to do as well.
Here is a nice video that has a lot of Bin Laden quotes.
