I just swapped in/out a new optical drive.
Upon turning on my system, I get this message:
"Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"
I'm using Windows 7 64-bit on a build I created myself. I just swapped a new DVD/CD Burner into it.
Help is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Go into the bios and set the 1st boot device to the Hard drive then to the optical, should be this easy if they're both SATA

If not make sure the pin in the back of the Hard drive is set to master and the new optical drive is set to slave

Thanks first of all.
However, I just put the same connectors into each component. I sticked the blue part of the IDE cable into the motherboard and plugged in the black one into the optical drive.
I'll try your first suggestion.
Thanks again and please check back for an update.
Edited:
Weird, I press delete and it didn't show the BIOS (that's what it says to hit when it turns on).

So you hooked up the ribbon cable (IDE), make sure everything is connected firmly in, but before you should have even set in the optical drives was to put a jumper in the pins to set it as a slave, sticker on it or an engraving should tell you how to do that.
once that's done you set both drives in order in the bios the way you want it to boot, and then you're done

Thanks.
Elaborate please? I'm slow today and didn't eat dinner :frown:.

I switched the IDE connector thing that is in the DVD/CD burner from black to gray. Did not work.
Thanks again.
1) Switch the IDE connector from black to gray - Failed
Any other suggestions? I can take a picture of the inside if needed.
You're not listening, this has nothing to do with the cable.
There is a section in between the power molex and the long ribbon connector (IDE) in between is a set of pins this is where a jumper goes to set the drive to many modes. Your hard drive, depending what it is, has one, if not, having none means that is how the master is set (also tells you in the sticker on top of the drive). now you don't want both drives set to master or you're computer cannot boot them.
You can check if you don't need to do anything at all if you go to your bios and see if it detects both drives then set in order HD 1st boot then optical,
if it doesn't detect it, you need to put that jumper in the back of the drive to set it to slave.

the little diagrams on the top tells you where to set the master, on this picture that would be the far right.
a picture of your optical drive would be nice yes, since your hard drive should be already set from the start.

Edit:
What is a jumper?

Ok, I'll open it again.
Thanks and sorry if I annoyed you by not reading your post correctly. :glomp:

Can't find the jumper, and my HDD is using SATA by the way.

this becomes an annoyance once you start switching to SATA, because SATA is a breeze to work with

Do jumpers come with the motherboard or the hard drive/ optical drive?

Alright I found one ju-- crap, where did that piece go?
Just kidding.
I found it connected to the optical drive already and took it out.
Now what?
Also, thanks for all the help Craptasket.

Here is the hard drive.

Optical drive is a GCC-4480B ( model ) from Hitachi. It is from a 7 year old Dell because my Lite-On died recently. I would try to send it in for a replacement, but I'm lazy and I'll just try to get a replacement later.
Can't take high enough quality picture with this Macbook's webcam.

Computer started up, but no optical drive is detected. :sigh:
Probably the IDE cable is loose for the optical drive.
I'll try again Friday and if I'm lucky tomorrow.
I think it is connected properly now, since that the computer is functioning correctly. So do I just go into BIOS and do something?
uhm, just make sure the BIOS reads your drives and go to boot order and set the Hard drive to boot first them the optical. done
I'll try that later tonight.
Thanks
