Ugh, its scary thinking my Girlfriend lives there.
Are the National Guard the Police in Venezuela? Because the National Guard are federalized militia and part of the Army over here.

Only the Bolivarian National Guard who work with the Venezuelan police, only if there are riots or protests only but many times can have the option to make arrests if ordered to
Venezuela is having public image problems now that Hugo Chavez isn't around to say things about the US that Facepunch agrees with.

no, there's municipal police, then there's state police, then there's national police, then there's the national guard, that's the hierarchy.
also here's my own translation
Criminal defense lawyer Luis Armando Betancourt, a member of the Venezuelan Penal Forum NGO, denounced today the terrible tortures to which some of the students incarcerated by the Government for various different charges have been subjected to.
"In the State of Carabobo one of the students denounced that he was subjected to anal rape by a rifle", explained Betancourt during an interview with NTN24.
The lawyer pointed out that the young men withheld by the Bolivarian National Guard were ordered to kneel for over 5 hours and were hit in the head with a helmet. "Many of the students have injuries on their head, their bodies are bruised", he protested.
He explained that one of the students arrested was removed from his vehicle during his arrest, which was then set ablaze by National Guard members.
He denounced that further retaliation towards the students had taken place. "They know where they live, and they know they were indicted", he alerted.
Betancourt punctuated that during the court hearings which took place this Saturday some of the young men were let out with injunctions and others under house arrest.
"One of them was vomiting and defecating blood and the court said that they did not have the means to transport him to a hospital", he said.
"All of the students were injured", he denounced.
Betancourt indicated that the defense requested protective measures for the young men.
Skull fracture.
Alfredo Romero, director of the Penal Forum, claimed that one of the students detained has a skull fracture. "I expect that the prosecution has at least some heart to investigate the tortures that took place in Valencia (Carabobo) and that were left as official reports for the Public Ministry".
"This is the moment where I would like to say everything that has taken place in here. I would like to make the world know of the disgrace of a criminal justice system we have. I will use subtle terms: our criminal justice system is garbage", declaimed Romero.

I've never agreed with Chavez.
I agree though, Venezuela would be better off if he were still around. A competent despot may still be a despot, but at least he's competent.
Our current fucking problems are largely his fault.
We were not well with him to begin with, it's just that Americans will just blindly follow whoever claims to be against America because being against the establishment is hella rad.

Then I retract my previous statement.
Sound the horns.

To be honest I found it disgusting at times how a lot of people supported Chavez, for the simple fact he happened to share the same ideology as them or hated the same things he did.
*Insert bad penal sexual abuse joke*
