In particular, line rental costs were often not included in the advertised headline cost.
This part right here is some shit and should be stopped
ISPs should be forced to be clear about the service they're providing. It'll probably never happen, but they should be forced in adverts to clearly state (not in smallprint) line-rental fees, equipment rental fees (e.g. Modem/Router) and if the bandwidth has any fair-use policies or caps and if fair-use policies exist what triggers them.
Abolish data caps. I live in Sweden and cannot believe you have to put up with that shit.
And yeah corporations tend to skew the truth in advertisement all the time, real shitty thing to do, but transparency about fees and shit isn't too popular

I used to work for the Post Office Broadband in the UK (its shit anyway) but they had an 'Unlimited' Option.
It meant you could download how every much you wanted BUT if you went over 150GB a month, they would send you warning letters to let you know you're stealing other users bandwidth and if you carried on, they would but a forced-cap on via BT.
Wait we still have data caps in the UK?
Wait we still have data caps in the UK?
Yeap, even some business lines still have caps.
When actual unlimited broadband has to be branded as 'Totally Unlimited' or similar to make clear that it's not bullshit like the rest, there is a problem
My ISP offers 150 down, 20 up for their fastest plan. But then they have a plan above that which also offers 150 down and 20 up. The only difference is the first one has a 2TB Data cap and the third has a 3TB cap.
An entire plan dedicated to just a higher data cap. Way to be
I have a 1TB cap and I damn near hit it every month
My ISP is BT and I'm on the unlimited option and frequently use 750GB+ a month, haven't had warning from BT or any caps. A few years ago before infinity they would cap people but I haven't heard of them doing that for years.

BT unlimited is real unlimited afaik
Point is we shouldn't have to specify that
When we first moved in (last year) Sky Broadband tried to charge us a fuckload for sub 100kb/s internet with a 2GB cap. Their justification being that we're in the countryside.

Yeah there's this thing where ISP charge around double for country side...which makes no sense at all!

Yeah, i've been with BT for the last year, and downloaded horrendous amounts, no warning letter.
Lol I don't know a single person with a broadband cap
Truly third world

BT really doesn't seem to care. Which is odd since they're the biggest ISP.
On paper they probably do "care", but in reality they actually don't.

Some American ISPs do IIRC.
Andrew and Arnolds does too (which is an ISP here), but they're a pretty small company.
I hate how ISPs are allowed to advertise speeds in megabits per second. It's clearly done to show off a bigger number and to fool people who don't know that it's different than a megabyte.
I can download 30 GB per month with 110-250 KB/s. Fuck my ass.
