A Texas mom has developed a new app that is gaining a lot of attention with parents. It “forces” children to have to check in with their parents.
You text and call your children, but they don't respond. Not knowing where your child is can be frustrating, and even frightening. That is what prompted Houston mom, Sharon Standifird, to create an app that will “not” allow kids to ignore their parents and if they do the parents can remotely shut down the phone.
Standifird spent months designing and working with developers, creating Ignore No More. With one tap, all phone functions are disabled except a list of parent-selected contacts. Then the child can call their parents get the password and unlock their phone and they can always call 9-1-1. To parents, it is a genius idea. Their kids on the other hand may not think so.
"Well, I thought it was a good idea, but for other people, not me," Standifird's son, Brad said.
Standifird says, "As a parent all I have to do is touch the app, tap his name, to lock Bradley's device, enter at least a 4-digit pin and now I'm going to press Lock Bradley's phone. And if you watch, Bradley's phone, it's going to go blank. Bradley needs to call me because I am the person who has the unlock password."
The Ignore No More app is available for $1.99 and is only available for Android phones on Google Play. But Standifird is working on an iPhone version to be released soon.

Children will always find a way around parental controls
"Hey can I use your phone? My mom is being a nag again."
And that's assuming it isn't trivial to remove.

also what do you expect from a mom who calls her son "bradley"
Step 1.) Find app on phone
Step 2.) Hold finger on app
Step 3.) Hit the delete button

It's a pretty cool idea, however imagine if a crazy ex got a hold of this and set it to your phone while you're not looking. Possibilities possibilities.
This kinda just assumes that the kids are actively using their phone, instead of doing something else.
If I, as a kid, has discovered that my phone was locked, I'd have just shrugged and kept doing whatever the fuck I was doing.
Sounds incredibly frustrating. I know if this happened to me I'd just stop using the phone at all out of spite.

Nah man all these youngsters today are always 90% on their phones even if they are hanging out in a social gathering. Facebook/texting/instagram. Eyes are glued to the screen.
How exactly would the iPhone version of this work? As far as I know, Apple does not allow an application to take over any core functions, such as calling and SMS.

"i cant get a hold of my child so im going to shut off the phone anyway and make it even harder to contact my child". ok
Alternatively, don't rely on technology to parent for you.
If your child refuses to answer the phone, take away their smartphone for a while, and replace it with a dumbphone for emergencies.

Nah I initially made this mistake too
it leaves contacts unlocked

If I don't want to talk to someone, I don't answer.
Having a dumbphone wont change that.
Good luck trying to install your app on my LG Chocolate.

If I had a child and needed to tell them something and they didn't answer their phone, I'd be pretty damn pissed, especially considering the majority of parents pay for their child's phone.
Helicopter parents often take this too far, but it's rude to completely ignore a call, especially from your parents, and not even text back.

My 20 year old girlfriend's overbearing christian mother made her install this "Life360" app that tracks her phone wherever it is, what her mom doesn't know is that turning off location services essentially renders the app unable to display anything but the phone's last location, without so much as notifying the other users that can view her location :v:
This sounds incredibly abusable. Not just by obsessive parents either, I wouldnt think it would be that hard to grab a friends phone and shove this on it. (If your willing to pay a few bucks to mess with your friends)

I'm fed up of parents who thinks it's okay to control the lives of their children as they become adults going through college. It really should be counted as harassment.
It's pathetic and creepy.

It probably could be considered harassment or something similar once they are an adult, but what are you going to do? Take your parents to court?
A technical solution to a human problem will always fail.

I try not to derail but you joined facepunch when you were 9?
It probably could be considered harassment or something similar once they are an adult, but what are you going to do? Take your parents to court?
Therein lies the problem, because many people just aren't able to say no - either because they've been conditioned to fear their parents, or they are reliant on them for housing or money. It's straight up abuse.
I dunno, it really depends on the level of maturity that their child exhibits. Are they trustworthy? Can they be trusted to not be a complete dumbass? Then yes, it's creepy as fuck. If no, then you're still trying to be a good parent. I mean it takes a pretty shitty parent to just let you fall because you turned 18.
Regardless, once you turn 18 you're an adult. You can argue about it being an arbitrary age, but you are still an adult. Stalking any adult like that is wrong, regardless of whether you raised them or not.

That's okay though! Unless the parent is proactive and techie enough to root their child's phone, its easily removable with a factory reset!

Yeah but you're still going to have those parents that don't get that their kid is actually smart and they will still do all of that shit even though it's completely unnecessary
I try not to derail but you joined facepunch when you were 9?
I'm not who you responded to, but I did as well. I don't think it's hugely uncommon.
There's next to nothing stopping the child from uninstalling the app, at least so long as the phone is unlocked, and if you don't have access to your child's google account, you can't remotely install the app back (plus I'm sure the app has to be manually configured again).
Also if the child has a rooted phone, the app straight up tells them "we can't do shit"
How about
just take their goddamn phone
or punish them some other way
But yeah, this is easily abusable. And what if you forget the pin number?
