Hi,
I have a 15" mid 2010 macbook with 4gb RAM, 2.53ghz i5, seagate 500gb 5400rpm.
I was thinking about ordering this 500gb seagate momentus xt hybrid-HDD and then upgrading to 8gb of RAM. But I can't do both right now and was wondering which I should do first?
Isn't 8 excessive?
What do you do?
Depends on what you are doing with it. We need more information to help you.
well I plan on using photoshop cs5 a lot (don't have it yet) and maybe even editing some video with iMovie. I wanted to get the Momentus xt after i played with the new macbook air and felt how snappy it was compared to my "new" macbook pro. I had been reading about SSD performance but then I experienced it and since I lack the funds needed to obtain a true SSD with practical storage capacity I figured the seagate was the best bet. and since I already have 4gb of RAM as it is I assume that is more than enough to handle Cs5 so I could just put it off until later.
4 gigs of ram will handle just about anything unless you want to do heavy 3D rendering or Video/Audio(like with Final Cut Pro/ProTools, not iMovie/Garageband.) processing. As far as the drive goes, it's really impressive looking, especially for the price. As best as I can tell, since they don't say exactly what it is, is that it has a standard HDD in it and a small SSD. My guess is that commonly used files are stored in the SSD, but I could be completely wrong. Whatever it is, if you really need the speed, go for it.
yeah that is exactly what it is, the HDD part alone is faster than mine as it is 7200rpm where mine is 5400, but yeah it has 4gb of ssd flash memory that hold frequently used data. but anyway thanks!
I got a 15" Macbook Pro and put a 500GB Momentus XT in, snappier than the stock drive but I honestly don't see the 4GB flash memory doing much. I went for 500GB for space manly, heard mixed reports about the Momentus but besides the problem with the Mac not finding it at the start, I've had no problems.
4GB RAM seems to be fine, I haven't used any really have programs yet but will soon so I guess I'll know. Try 4GB for a bit and see how it works for you.
Well, I have 4gb RAM, and I've photoshopped 5000x5000+ images and have had no problems. I think I did a medium sized iMovie movie and it was perfectly fine, too. The only problem I've had with my RAM is with Windows XP not recognizing a gig of it, but Lightwave is perfectly snappy. No games have had any problems with it either. So no, upgrading your RAM is not worth it, in my opinion.
Also, I had a 500gb 5400 rpm drive and it was sluggish. Then when it turned out it was defective I upgraded to a 7200rpm and it was fine. I'm not sure if the Momentus would be a huge improvement, to be honest.
if its lagging you can always try Windows XP/7

I could watch that all day

That's just dumb. I was cruising happily along then I needed to install XP and then the whole ensemble got slower and more sluggish. Especially since the majority of XP disks are 32 bit which gimp your RAM. For example, I have 4gb of RAM and XP says 2.72gb.
ok so I ordered the HDD and when it gets here I'll let you know how the swap went and how it performs.
ok so the HDD is scheduled to arrive today, I am now wondering if I should just configure the new XT and pop it into my macbook and then restore from a time machine back-up or o with a clean install?
If you have lots of stuff configured on it and files and things and you don't want to deal with moving things manually, then I say time machine. OS X isn't prone to getting that clogged up, and you haven't had the machine for that long. You should be fine. Plus, time machine is fucking amazing.
ok I got it installed and I love it, I ended up using Time machine because SuperDuper! ended up failing and gave a HDD that was unusable. but yeah after giving it time to take notice of some frequented applications like iTunes and safari or iPhoto there is a big increase from the old drive.
