Since when has Nintendo actually met demand on their products?
Would really like them to step up production. If there were less shortages, wouldn't they make more money?

Wii U?

Demand would probably be higher if Nintendo actually marketed it properly.
My point is, this seems to be a running problem with Nintendo.

Isnt the Wii U selling terribly?
I still don't even understand what Amiibos are for. What do they do and why is Nintendo pushing them so hard?

They're NFC figures and they serve various purposes in different games that they're compatible with. Like in Super Smash Bros, they're AI players that learn from fighting against you and eventually get really good at the game with the right training (they can be trained to fight in really specific ways too,) in Mario Kart they unlock costumes for the Mii character, etc. But the main reason is that people like owning merchandise like that whether they're using it or not. I mainly bought the Ness Amiibo because I love the Mother series and I want something physical to represent that. Everyone wants to get their favourite character.

They're just collectable figures that offer small bonus content depending on the game.
The content they offer is pretty insignificant however, like in Smash 4 they just let you train a custom AI.
Sounds pretty gimmicky but I can see why people would want to collect them.
I love their functionality in Smash. I have Pikachu and Peach amiibos and its adorable how in the beginning, their AI is really basic. But by time you grind them to level 50, they are pros that can more than likely kick your ass.
It just feels like no other game compares to smash when it comes to amiibo functionality.

Pretty much.
Its still behind the Gamecube in terms of sales.
It's weird when Nintendo can meet the demand on consoles and games because they're not selling all that great besides like, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. obviously, but gamecube adapters and amiibos have such high amounts of demand that the market goes absolutely batshit with them. I hope they don't take the wrong message from all this and start downsizing their gaming side of things.
