• Quentin Tarantino is suing Gawker Media for leaking his newest script
Quentin Tarantino has filed a copyright lawsuit against Gawker Media for allegedly disseminating copies of his script, The Hateful Eight. Last week, the famous director was outraged after details about the Western circulated. He was so irate that he told the media that he wouldn't be making the picture as his next film. Soon afterwards, Gawker's Defamer blog linked to the 146 page script under a post titled, "Here Is the Leaked Quentin Tarantino Hateful Eight Script." "Gawker Media has made a business of predatory journalism, violating people’s rights to make a buck," says Tarantino's lawsuit. "This time, they went too far. Rather than merely publishing a news story reporting that Plaintiff’s screenplay may have been circulating in Hollywood without his permission, Gawker Media crossed the journalistic line by promoting itself to the public as the first source to read the entire Screenplay illegally." The lawsuit filed by attorneys Martin Singer and Evan Spiegel at Lavely & Singer in California federal court emphasizes the whereabouts of the script. According to the complaint, "Their headline boasts... 'Here,' not someplace else, but 'Here' on the Gawker website. The article then contains multiple direct links for downloading the entire Screenplay through a conveniently anonymous URL by simply clicking button-links on the Gawker page, and brazenly encourages Gawker visitors to read the Screenplay illegally with the invitation to 'Enjoy!' it." According to Tarantino's lawsuit, Gawker has refused to back down from "repeat demands for the removal of the posted URL links" and "submissions of DMCA notices of copyright infringement." The lawsuit seems designed to counter Gawker's potential defense of safe harbor under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The coming dispute also figures to raise issues of contributory liability as explored in the Supreme Court's Grokster ruling. An examination of the liability of linking to copyrighted material also came up in adult entertainment publisher Perfect 10's legal battles with Amazon and Google. That dispute went up to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which remanded the issue of whether in-line linking with knowledge of copyrighted material could be unlawful. "The reason for the Copyright Act is to protect against the Defendants’ conduct," states Tarantino's lawsuit which demands actual and statutory damages as well as Gawker's profits in the amount of at least $1 million. I still haven't seen this script, and it should already circulate in many sites by now (just like it was with Django Unchained or Inglourious Basterds)
I'm really not suprised, Gawker is pretty much as low as you can get in terms of journalism.
I think he's kind of overreacting about quitting the whole movie in general.
Might just be me, but shouldn't Quentin find out WHO leaked it and then sue said person instead? Suing Gawker Media isn't gonna accomplish anything useful, even though I dislike them for butchering the concept of journalism.
I think he's kind of overreacting about quitting the whole movie in general.
As far as I remember he's shelving it for like 5 years so he's not quitting it entirely, he's delaying it Still a real shame, especially after hearing that a role was written for Christoph Waltz
Fucking good.
Hopefully he can bring that shit down all the way. Predatory journalism shit is probably in my list of 10 worst things/
Actually, nevermind. I found that script, judging by first ten pages - it's pretty good. What's even more surprising I've found it on Gawker's site, it's still there.

if he's suing gawker, I don't care about the reasons, I'll support him. Gawker is a vile excuse for journalism, and their practices are anything but ethical.
Did they not see this coming? He was pretty pissed already knowing it was leaked.
I think he's kind of overreacting about quitting the whole movie in general.
I'd do it.
As far as I remember he's shelving it for like 5 years so he's not quitting it entirely, he's delaying it Still a real shame, especially after hearing that a role was written for Christoph Waltz
It's still stupid and I can't wrap my head around it. "My script has been leaked, so instead of working on it as planned (because what's really changed so much that warrants delaying it?) let's give others plenty of time to steal my ideas and let it circulate." It's not like he's solving the problem in any way by doing that. It's done, get over it and move on with production.
I love all the armchair directors here saying how silly it is to not work on a movie when the very blueprints for said movie have been leaked. I'm sure you would all know what it's like to have something like that leak. Anyways, I'm not really a fan of Tarantino's work (not my cup of tea) but I applaud him suing Gawker Media. Gawker is complete and utter shit and I hope his lawsuit works out well.
There was a time when Nintendo employees each received an employee number and the documents for their portion of hardware or game development had it printed as a background on their documents. That way if it leaked Nintendo could instantly find out WHO leaked it and "take necessary action". The programming manual for the N64 has it. [t]http://www.jax184.com/projects/ultra64/T3i_1602s.JPG[/t] My money is on Gawker paying someone for the script, scanning it in, then hosting it on any of the anonymous file sites to distance them when the shit hit the fan. Then again you would be nothing short of retarded to host something this high profile on your own servers.

You're in the same position as me, but if you are a director, know Tarantino personally, or can give me a good (experienced and educated) reason then by all means, please do so because that's what I'm looking for. I'm not trying to be a asshole or start anything, but do you know what it's like because you seem to be speaking from experience, as if you're at higher pedestal than us. I'm just stating my opinion, I honestly feel like shelving it is doing more harm than the actual leaking of the script and I can't see a good reason for it. gasket didn't leak it or host it, somebody else did gawker just reported it
It must be a pretty damn good script if he's this pissed off about it. Just imagine if the script never got leaked, and how amazing the film would end up becoming.
Tarantino gets pissed at anything. There's this video somewhere of people who walked past him outside of a dunkin donuts or something and they stopped to say hi, and he started insulting them and threatening them like he's somehow able to beat up two guys alone.
After learning Tuesday that his script for The Hateful Eight was leaked, Quentin Tarantino did what any butthurt child would do: he decided to cancel the movie. Tarantino became aware of the script leak when his agent began getting calls from interested stars looking to be cast in the ensemble western. He then called Mike Fleming Jr. at Deadline so he could make his anger public: "I'm very, very depressed," Tarantino said. "I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn't mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people, and apparently it's gotten out today."
arseholes..

That's just going to bite you in the ass in the long run, he's lucky it happened before they started production Beside Tarantino himself said he's not exactly short on new ideas
It must be a pretty damn good script if he's this pissed off about it. Just imagine if the script never got leaked, and how amazing the film would end up becoming.
I don't think it's so much that it's damn good as much as he was already so disappointed the script was leaked to agents and such to begin with and now this shit happens. You can equate it to a bird crapping on your shoe and accidentally stepping into big pile of dogshit a few minutes later.
I imagine your enthusiasm for working on something like this would be hit by having it leaked. He could still make the movie, but he probably no longer has the drive or motivation. And why force yourself to make a movie you don't feel good about?
Good. Die, Gawker Media. Die.
I think he's kind of overreacting about quitting the whole movie in general.
He's spent a lot of time thinking and drawing up a script for his next feature movie, he goes to share it with some people and bam it's leaked, he's not going to sit around and go "shit happens", he's going to find the website that leaked it or the culprit and go after him He's absolutely right for doing it

Regardless, I can't wait for whatever he does next, I'm sure it will be brilliant.
I think he's kind of overreacting about quitting the whole movie in general.
You put your heart and soul into a work only to have it shit upon by someone only wanting to make a quick buck over it. Tell us how you feel.
You put your heart and soul into a work only to have it shit upon by someone only wanting to make a quick buck over it. Tell us how you feel.
release it so the people that didn't read the spoilers can enjoy it? like pretty much every other thing that's been leaked?
