The UK foreign secretary reportedly ran the idea past French President Emmanuel Macron at a summit on Thursday. But Downing Street said he had been referring to a panel looking at Anglo-French major projects. Experts said a bridge was technically possible but some critics ridiculed the concept. Mr Johnson said in a tweet that the UK and France had agreed that a panel of experts should be assigned to look at "major projects". A source close to the foreign secretary said he also thought it was "crazy" the two countries were only connected by one railway line when they were merely 20 miles apart.

As ideas go, it has not been a resounding success. Architects, hauliers, the maritime industry, and an MP have so far expressed their scepticism about Boris Johnson’s ambition to build a 22-mile (35km) bridge across the Channel - and even the prime minister has signalled it won’t happen. The foreign secretary proposed the idea on Thursday, telling the French president that it was “ridiculous” that two of the world’s biggest economies were joined only by a single railway line and later tweeting a picture of the two giving a thumbs-up. But on Friday, Downing Street swiftly poured cold water on the idea. Pressed several times on whether the prime minister was open to a cross-Channel bridge, Theresa May’s spokesman said there were “no specific plans”.
BBC Guardian Independent I think Boris should be leaving bridges alone, considering how well the last time he tried to build a bridge went
Boris thought the Foreign Secretary's job was to literally build bridges with other countries, is planning a bridge to China next
It would be fuckin sick though
I could see it being beneficial from a public works standpoint, but do they need another way of getting to France by car? The Channel Tunnel is already there
The foreign secretary proposed the idea on Thursday, telling the French president that it was “ridiculous” that two of the world’s biggest economies were joined only by a single railway line and later tweeting a picture of the two giving a thumbs-up.
What are planes and ships?
Considering the channel itself is a shipping lane I dont think a bridge would be a good thing at all I mean yeah a cheaper way to get to France would be nice but we already have short haul flights, the tunnel and ferries.
You do know you can build bridges with enough height clearance even for aircraft carriers to pass through right?
I know that but just the thought of a 22 mile long bridge, especially raised for craft to pass below sounds ridiculous expensive
I know that but just the thought of a 22 mile long bridge, especially raised for craft to pass below sounds ridiculous expensive
And knowing this fucking government's building standards, a disaster when it inevitably breaks in half and crumbles into the sea like a snapped kit-kat.
You want something to do build a bridge between ireland and the rest of Britain
Just go full on fool and bring back the Panropa plan and drain the English Channel.
better to build a tunnel passing through the mantle from london to paris
I know that but just the thought of a 22 mile long bridge, especially raised for craft to pass below sounds ridiculous expensive
On top of that its also one of the busiest water ways on earth, blocking parts of it with construction will be awful.
Would make more sense to build to Ireland
Would make more sense to build to Ireland
What reason would the Irish have to want to go to France?
Considering the Spanish Armada was wiped out by the weather, I can imagine anything larger than a bus during high winds would cause havoc. Unless it was a roofed bridge but that would be silly. Maintenance would be a nightmare, logistics, unfathomable
