Considering the channel itself is a shipping lane I dont think a bridge would be a good thing at all

I mean yeah a cheaper way to get to France would be nice but we already have short haul flights, the tunnel and ferries.

On top of that its also one of the busiest water ways on earth, blocking parts of it with construction will be awful.

Considering the Spanish Armada was wiped out by the weather, I can imagine anything larger than a bus during high winds would cause havoc. Unless it was a roofed bridge but that would be silly.
