VR exclusives are total bullshit and an important reason for making VR unappealing from a technical point of view.
Not that I disagree, but wouldn't there be some specific games that would work better on the HTC Vive as opposed to the Oculus or vice versa?
Serious Sam isn't one of them.
We're in a much better position to absorb financial risk than a new VR developer, so we are happy to offset that giving developers development funds (essentially pre-paid Steam revenue). However there are no strings attached to those funds—they can develop for the Rift or PlayStation VR or whatever the developer thinks are the right target VR systems.
Even keeping in mind that Valve would obviously stand to make a lot of extra money if VR catches on, that sounds surprisingly generous to me.

I think that's a different kind of exclusive from what he's talking about. In context, it's about publishers arranging for exclusivity as part of a funding deal for the devs. It's not about exclusivity as a result of actual hardware limitations.
imo the only real way you're going to make good VR games is making games that are designed from the ground up to be VR games, which means they probably won't work too well with other platforms.
Hear, hear.

Hardware wise, both headsets are pretty much the same. Once the Touch controllers are out, the differences between the two in terms of what things they can do in VR are going to be extremely minimal. So there's no really no reason why the majority of games couldn't be made to work with both headsets.
Don't forget shit like Oculus attempting to block the Vive from playing their games even though they work perfectly fine.
$$$
Looks like a lot of people were right about Facebook buying Oculus lol
the thing I mostly saw people doomsaying about the facebook acquisition was forced social apps and obtrusive advertisements somehow injected into everything

making things vive-specific I can see being reasonable at this point in time, but anything oculus can do sans-touch the vive also does and there's very few reasons to build for oculus while excluding vive, sans lacking a kit to develop with (which is no longer a valid excuse)
There was a small digital dust-up earlier this week when Croteam developer Mario Kotlar said on Reddit (via UploadVR) that Oculus VR had offered it "a shitton of money" to make Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope an Oculus Rift exclusive.
I did and I'm glad they didn't. I probably should have worded that better.
They should have took that offer imo VR is not gonna go anywhere until the hardware is affordable.
It's like they didn't learn over the past hundreds of hardware exclusive games we had in the last 30 years.

Making software exclusive to just the Oculus is bad for all consumers.
Arbitrary exclusives are something the industry has needed to get rid of for a long time in my opinion. All they do is screw over consumers choice of hardware.

I really don't see what kind of profit comes from console exclusivity. I mean, Sony sold 30mil PS4. How many more can they sell with a new exclusive title?

Depends how niche it is. For example: Bloodborne. Can't play it on Xbone, can't play it on PC, and no other developer is making good games in that genre.
So if you're on the fence about what console to get and that comes out, you're probably going to buy a PS4.

Croteam is an uncorruptable and proud dev team
they're one of the few veteran devs out there who are truly and completely genuine about their work

Not to mention with a good track record with games.
Not to mention with a good track record with games.
not to mention that them and Nintendo are the only two devs I can think of that polish their games beyond expectation
tTP and Sam1hd/sam3 run very, very nicely on a system

like halo (excluding 1+2)? or mario (or any nintendo game)? or like every ps3 game?

the only reason why console hardware sells is because it has software exclusives. why bother getting a xbox over a ps4 if they played the game games and ran the same software?

it's a loan -- you have to pay that back. there's no interest, but that's the same kind of deal any publisher will give you. I assume you still have to apply to it, so it's not like they're just handing out money without any risk assessment.

I wonder if their tone would change if they didn't have enough money to make their next game.

Who knows. They don't exactly use big budgets and Sam VR was a side project.
Devs who need money need money so I can't blame devs who take the offer.

Well, Croteam's biggest audience is in East Europe and Russia, so they HAVE to make it able to run on potatoes. I played SS3(2011) on a PC from 2004 in Windows XP.
It's a really random question, but why do articles still use that picture of Gabe? Isn't that from like 10 years ago?

Well I guess they did learn from that. Just the wrong lessons, IMHO.
