• "The disabled should be paid UNDER minium wage" - says Conservative MP

Conservative MP Backbencher Philip Davies has told that the disabled should be able to work for less than minimum wage - to give them a better chance of finding employment. "Employers are more likely to turn down a disabled person, this could help them get onto the job ladder" He said he had talked to people with mental health problems during a visit to a surgery run by the charity Mind, and they had "accepted" that they would be passed over in favour of jobseekers without disabilities. "Given some of those people with a learning disability clearly, by definition, cannot be as productive in their work as somebody who has not got a disability of that nature, then it was inevitable given the employer was going to have to pay them both the same they were going to take on the person who was going to be more productive, less of a risk," he said. But Mind spokesman Sophie Corlett said: "It is a preposterous suggestion that someone who has a mental health problem should be prepared to accept less than minimum wage to get their foot in the door with an employer. "People with mental health problems should not be considered a source of cheap labour and should be paid appropriately for the jobs they do." A Conservative Party spokesman told the BBC: "These comments do not reflect the views of the Conservative Party and do not reflect government policy". The minimum wage for over 21s is currently £5.93, and is set to rise to £6.08 by October http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-13809620
I don't see a problem. Getting under minimum is better than no wage. I mean, if his disability makes him do the job not as good as without a disability.
what a fuck tard the disabled have to work harder to get the same job done than other people
This article confuses me greatly. Giving handicapped people less money so they get better jobs?
I don't see a problem. Getting under minimum is better than no wage. I mean, if his disability makes him do the job not as good as without a disability.
what if this person haves a family.?
Stupid idea, and I saw some absolute idiots posting on another forum that it would actually help disabled people because employers would be more likely to employ them. Great, they get easy jobs as slaves because employers don't want to pay. As a tourettic OCD sufferer myself I think it's absolute bullshit that I could be considered 'less productive', and therefore should be expected to volunteer to be paid less based purely upon assumption.
I have different prospect. How about all politicians are paid the exactly average wage in the country? This way perhaps some people who aren't doing it only for money could get the places, and also they would have personal reason for making the living level better.
I don't see a problem. Getting under minimum is better than no wage. I mean, if his disability makes him do the job not as good as without a disability.
So just because I was born missing a leg or with a learning disability means I shouldn't get paid as much? This kind of thing is why we have the Equal Opportunities act.
How about this, instead of telling people what they should be working for, put your theories to the test and allow people to work at whatever wages they want, allow them to opt out of the minimum wage. Don't allow businesses to set wages below the standard minimum, but allow workers applying to work for lower if they want. Is this a problem?

I can be a conservative MP now?
I don't see a problem. Getting under minimum is better than no wage. I mean, if his disability makes him do the job not as good as without a disability.
I might could agree with you if the job paid above minimum wage and they just paid them less but minimum wage has a purpose to give people at least the amount they need to get by without struggling and you can't give them less than that especially if they are disabled and aren't just slacking off.
We all live in a country with the "Right to Work". Meaning, we don't have to work (But to all actions is a equal or greater consequence). We all expect to get paid for the work we do, and for our performance. Some people are self-entitled with their oversized egos. Thinking they should get paid just to be at work! Not paid TO work. Their lower performance and output typically can lead them to be fired. Unless they're heavily entangeled in office politics and the like. How this is fair:

We all expect to get paid for what we do. Higher our output and performance, we expect to get the higher payment. Someone with a retardation issue will be obviously handicapped in high output and performance compared to a "normal" worker. So if the average is making Minimum, and the handicapped cannot meet or exceed: they should get lower pay.
Harder to fire. It is nearly impossible to fire a handicapped person after they're hired in and passed their 30-90day evaluation period.
Minors and Apprentices get under minimum; why cant the incapable?
Insurance and other costs to the business.
I find that handicapped people, who are slower or/or incapable of performing their job duties compared to the average worker should be punished in terms of pay. What I find so wrong about this:

Human equality: Its a good moral position to stand at. But we should all be aware that not everyone is 'equal'. Regardless, they should still be treated as a normal, average human being. Disregarding all their handicaps may they be physical or mental.
Their insurance premiums and other medical expenses. People with physical or mental handicaps are frequent customers for doctors and hospitals. Their insurance premiums will increase, and their time spent at a doctors office or ER will also be increased.
Corporate greed. If corporations can get away with paying much less for handicapped person, then to a average worker. They may abuse this right with others expense.
Okay, so there isn't much there to list on that. But the first one is the best one. In total, I favor them getting less than minimum wage because they have the potential to be harder worker than the others. But, not all handicaps are bad, nor rehabilitating in the sense of work output/performance. Like say someone who is paralyzed from their waist down. Does this mean they should be paid under minimum work for a job that only requires them to use them less than 25% of the time? Should someone who is mute work at a call center take a pay cut? What about the person who is extremely introverted working in customer service? There is many ways to point at things. But I think this MP has got it right with his standpoints. Yeah it sounds inhumane, but we still need to look at the practical ends of things.
Well if helping people who aren't working is the goal here, why stop with lowering pay? Why doesn't everyone just work for free? Then everyone would have jobs!

Also they want to be re-elected.
I don't see a problem. Getting under minimum is better than no wage. I mean, if his disability makes him do the job not as good as without a disability.
Jesus, the majority of your posts mixed with your title just makes me laugh.
Stupid idea, and I saw some absolute idiots posting on another forum that it would actually help disabled people because employers would be more likely to employ them.
Isn't that why people dislike illegal immigrants? Because they work for less so they take peoples jobs?
Philip Davies should consider spending a few years in the asylum to get his head sorted out. Speaking aloud of such a heinous and vile suggestion has got to indicate some form of twisted madness in his head.
Isn't that why people dislike illegal immigrants? Because they work for less so they take peoples jobs?
And the identity theft industry they help fuel.
Unfortunately, this two-face issue is one where both sides' arguments aren't really the most optimal for the good of the disabled. On one hand, employers have some incentive to hire disabled workers over others and it's great that those people are working because they might have not gotten the job otherwise. On the other hand, if you lower the minimum wage people are going to get paid the bare minimum and if employers lower minimum wages for these types of people who already struggle with things like medical insurance and their preexisting disabilities (which would happen under this measure) that's simply atrocious. Getting more of the disabled employed is a splendid thing. However, there could be other ways of doing it, like leaving the minimum wage as is and offering tax incentives to businesses that employ the disabled (which would pay back the economy and save money for the government, in turn, due to the employed having spending money and paying taxes).
I don't see a problem. Getting under minimum is better than no wage. I mean, if his disability makes him do the job not as good as without a disability.
The UK has Social Security. Let me guess, American?
I see the logic behind it but it's twisted

Both sides aren't the solution to this issue - why not just issue tax breaks to businesses employing the disabled equivalent to the minimum wage drop so that handicapped people can pay taxes back to the government but still pay living expenses?
The UK has Social Security. Let me guess, American?
No not american, there's a flag under my name(but it's wrong, it should be LV) Anyway, I didn't mean you should get less just because you're disabled, I meant if because of your disability you're less productive, you get paid less. It's common sense.
The reason it's minimum wage is because it's the minimum someone can be expected to live on comfortably for their local cost of living. Paying less than that causes too much of a strain to live comfortably, jeeze.

I've sometimes wondered myself what to do with the disabled.. I mean they are a burden. Some hard working person who gets his leg fucked up though that's just.. tragic, same as death! And should not be left in financially fucked but then again someone born retarded, we'll we can't quite leave them either so I guess some schooling-home type for that. Now that I think of it I don't even know where most of them live. Frankly some people wish to adopt retarded even. But if there's no one for them, there's the state standing up like they all should. Some disabled can't work at all I suppose.
Give people pay based on effort. If a disabled person doesn't do anything fire him. If he tries hard to do the job well (even if it ends up sucking) pay him a fair wage.
