• Microsoft: we don't like Flash either

[release]Microsoft has joined archrival Apple in criticising Adobe Systems' widely used Flash multimedia software, creating a rare bond among the two computing giants. Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs sharply criticised Flash, which is used to produce videos and games for many internet sites in a blog post on Friday morning Australian time. Adobe's chief executive Shantanu Narayen then went on the counter-attack in a video interview. Apple has banned Flash from its iPhone and iPad. Now a Microsoft executive has pitched in, saying while the ubiquity of Flash makes it easy for consumers to access video on the web, the standard has flaws. "Flash does have some issues, particularly around reliability, security and performance," said Dean Hachamovitch, general manager for the Internet Explorer browser. He said that Microsoft is backing the same protocols for delivering multimedia content over the Web that Apple is promoting, a group of standards known as HTML5. But Microsoft was more conciliatory toward Adobe than Apple, saying it works closely with Flash engineers to help fix bugs that it finds in the product. Steve Jobs, by comparison, said in his open letter that it is time for the industry to move beyond Flash. "Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs," he said. "But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards - all areas where Flash falls short." Adobe dismissed the claims, saying that Apple was simply trying to promote its own products. "Apple's moves to block Flash and other technologies are designed to protect a business model that locks developers and consumers into a single, proprietary stack," Adobe spokeswoman Holly Campbell said. Some 75 per cent of all video on the web are Flash-based. Popular Flash-based sites such as Hulu can't run on the iPhone or iPad, according to Adobe. But sites like YouTube have worked around this by specially designing non-Flash apps for those devices.[/release] http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/microsoft-we-dont-like-flash-either-20100503-u2bk.html Hey, At lest theres no pirate flags
So, it's Adobe and Google versus Microsoft and Apple?
So, it's Adobe and Google versus Microsoft and Apple?
I guess so
hey fuck you too microsoft
The day google makes an acceptable computer OS is the day I throw windows away. Fuck you Microsoft.
Flash CS5 will have the ability to export to HTML5 canvas.
Good. I hate Flash so much for anything not animation. Actionscript just angers me.

I hate these kind of stories. "This person said something bad about this so he and everyone he works with must hate it." Microsoft does not hate Flash, they understand it has flaws and work with Adobe to fix it. Microsoft will never ban Flash because they understand it has many uses and is very common. By pointing out the issues Flash does have, it just shows he is aware of it's flaws and what can be improved. Apple on the other hand is saying because they disapprove of Flash, no-one should use it. Big difference.
The day google makes an acceptable computer OS is the day I throw windows away. Fuck you Microsoft.
Long as steam supports it I will gladly download/buy it.
I can't wait for a google OS (not the one coming out with only a browser) I for one accept th coming of our google overlords
Well, they're right. We need to switch to a more open web - one that can work across many different devices. Flash is an outdated proprietary format that is no longer really needed due to advances in HTML. While making a switch so early is a but dumb, we'll need to eventually.
Linux is nice and certainly has its uses, but it's no replacement for Windows.
It can be, it just depends on what you do with your computer. For example, I'm on a netbook right now. There is no way I'm going to be able to use my school copy of Autodesk Inventor or play intense games due to hardware limitations so I got rid of Windows on it and never looked back. Really, everyone should at least try a version of Linux to see how they like it, especially since Steam is coming out for it.
Linux is nice and certainly has its uses, but it's no replacement for Windows.
ignorant fool
Yeah, I might try linux sometime, feels like i'm going to the dark side of the OSs... But i'm way too impressed by chrome to doubt of google's aptitude as an awesome softhouse.

FYI, Chrome OS is Linux, just way over-simplified. [editline]10:35PM[/editline]
Flash isn't on Microsoft's mobile OS, Windows Phone 7, either
Although that might be due to hardware limitations. Some of the Droid phones that just came out aren't powerful enough to support flash.
so what exactly are the problems with flash? In the article they just say it's bad, they don't give many examples or any proof that it's bad.
Anybody read Steve Jobs' thoughts on Flash? Frankly, I agree with him. http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/
Come with me. There is something I must show you...
This. A million times this. Faster, safer, even runs the games and apps most people thought would fail, and a lot of native programs. Fuck yes.
Although that might be due to hardware limitations. Some of the Droid phones that just came out aren't powerful enough to support flash.
Which is one of the reasons why it isn't on the iPhone; yet people constantly complain and bash the iPhone for that exact reason.
Microsoft still supports Adobe rather than just stopping support for any/everything. Microsoft has jumped on to HTML5. They're trying to help Adobe. HTML5 can single handedly kill flash unless Adobe changes. Sure you can joke about IE8 and previous. Microsoft, for the first time is actually doing something with IE9. So before you go hoop hoop fuck you microsoft, actually take the time and factor everything else.
so what exactly are the problems with flash? In the article they just say it's bad, they don't give many examples or any proof that it's bad.
It's entirely proprietary, slow, and has shitloads of vulnerabilities, relies on conversion for videos in mobile devices, etc.
It's entirely proprietary, slow, and has shitloads of vulnerabilities, relies on conversion for videos in mobile devices, etc.
I can understand the complaints about video, but according to some bench marks, flash is faster than HTML5.
So, it's Adobe and Google versus Microsoft and Apple?
What? Google doesn't support Flash at all. They'd be on Apple and Microsoft's side on this.
Anybody read Steve Jobs' thoughts on Flash? Frankly, I agree with him. http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/
I agree too, but the fucking pretentiousness in that document made me want to stab Steve's eyeball with a pencil.
What? Google doesn't support Flash at all. They'd be on Apple and Microsoft's side on this.
They're the only one out of the current smartphones (Android vs. iPhone OS vs. Windows Phone 7) that's going to have Flash.
Why is everyone supporting flash? I thought you guys were a bunch of open source firefox loving standards fags who of all peopel shoudl recognize that flash is a piece of shit.
