• HP brings back Windows 7 'by popular demand'
HP really wants people to buy a Windows 7 PC instead of a Windows 8 machine. The PC maker has been emailing customers over the weekend noting that "Windows 7 is back." A new promotion, designed to entice people to select Windows 7 over Windows 8 with $150 of "savings," has launched on HP’s website with a "back by popular demand" slogan. The move is clearly designed to position Windows 7 over Microsoft’s touch-centric Windows 8 operating system.

In fact, if you browse to HP’s home section and navigate to desktop PCs then you’ll only be presented with Windows 7 machines by default as no Windows 8 PCs are listed until you start customizing the section using optional filters.
Wow, HP doing something right for a change. Did I accidentally fall out of the Windows 8 is good universe, because I must be the only person in the world that actually prefers Windows 8 to 7.
Also FP is mostly a hivemind that is against W8.
Consensus =/= Hivemind. AND STOP GENERALIZING.
Despite the fortunate lack of Metro, Windows 7 isn't as fast as Windows 8. As a customer I think I'd still rather suffer with Metro for the sake of speed (even though I'd probably install some hack that gives back the start menu). Not sure that this is the right move for HP, to be preloading desktops with a technologically lesser version of Windows.

[editline]20th January 2014[/editline] Also FP is mostly a hivemind that is against W8.
It's mostly against Microsoft assuming Apple's iterative upgrade process rather than actually improving their product in any tangible benefit besides burning out SSD's at an excessive rate. That and DX11.2 pissed people off.
I want an os that im used and accustomed to, not some gimmicky touchscreen tablet bs. ty microsoft
Well considering microsoft employees even call Windows 8 "the new vista," this might actually be the case.
And it's really sad, because it's not even 10% as bad as Vista.
Should i feel lucky that i didn´t experienced Vista AT ALL?
Should i feel lucky that i didn´t experienced Vista AT ALL?
Yes. Counter Strike 1.6 would lag when I had Vista - not Source, 1.6. On high end 2005 computer. It was THAT bad.
I'd use W8 if it had Aero. Apart from that it's a solid OS, which can be frustrating at first because Metro, obviously. But spend some time tweaking it and you'll get used to it and you may actually find it useful. Or remove Metro with Start8.
Did this happen with XP and Vista?
My new laptop came with Windows 8. After adding back the start menu with "Startisback" I've really had no problems whatsoever. How it'll fair in the coming months remains to be seen though...
And it's really sad, because it's not even 10% as bad as Vista.
Technically it seems completely fine, faster than 7 too. They really screwed up the system for advanced users though, I can't even connect to my uni's WLAN without third party software because they removed the config options in 8.1.
The start screen is so useless... I've had windows 8 for months and never bothered with that crap. [editline]20th January 2014[/editline] It seemed intriguing at first, but realistically it's a dull novelty.
Consensus =/= Hivemind. AND STOP GENERALIZING.
Yes, since when has there been a consensus on the Internet

The only thing that makes legacy start better is people are used to it.

[editline]20th January 2014[/editline] In fact I'm one of the few who likes the metro interface with mouse
I used to hate Windows 8 interface but after months of using it, it kinda grow on me. I got used to it and manage to learn most of the features. Get with the times. Don't be an old cranky person who hate change. Use Windows 8.
Metro is better than the legacy start menu. Period.
Fullscreen, giant fuck off icons, and an extra layer of "metro apps" that are obscured from your view from the desktop. Yep "better"
Why is it in every Windows 8 thread the supporters of Windows 8 feel the need to insult people when trying to get them to use it? "If you din't like Windows 8 you're just stobborn and dumb! Try Windows 8" "Get with the times OLD MAN! Use Windows 8. You're not my real dad!" How about fuck off. Metro is a fucking terrible system, I don't give a shit if you like it, I hate it.

As it stands, the one other valid reason besides Metro why people won't upgrade from Win7 to Win8 is because the insignificant improvements does not justify a 100$+ upgrade.

Are you actually this ignorant or do you not realize you're doing exactly what they are except swap that number 8 for 7? Not surprised that they're bringing 7 back though, it got phased out near instantly for no good reason, 7 is still a great OS and a lot of people are still used to it and will prefer it over 8.
... Are you actually this ignorant or do you not realize you're doing exactly what they are except swap that number 8 for 7?
That's the problem though, there's people who shove Win7/Win8 down other people's throat and then they have the audacity to go on another thread and say something along the lines of: "Let people do what they want to do."
Fullscreen, giant fuck off icons, and an extra layer of "metro apps" that are obscured from your view from the desktop. Yep "better"
Whether you like the new interface or not, this is so misleading that I'm awed that you managed to put together that post at all. Your only reasonable point is that fact that it's full screen, and even then it's debatable whether it's a problem or not. If you love ant-sized icons, they come in a taskbar-sized flavour directly on the Metro start screen. If you're on "desktop" why would you use Metro apps anyway? I agree that the current disconnect is too large, but if you don't like them, you can just use the programs you used on Windows 7. There's literally no detrimental effect of having the Metro apps on there as well.

Use Windows 8.
But face it, Windows has a huge corporate market which has trouble adjusting to UI changes and in that sense Microsoft has fallen flat on its face with 8 no matter how much tech-savvy people might easily adjust to it I'm a fan of Win8 but at the same time it's a big flop
Metro is better than the legacy start menu. Period. The only thing that makes legacy start better is people are used to it.
It's prettier but less practical unless you have a tablet. I have a laptop with touchpad, so making the start screen full-screen simply makes the transition more jarring and increases the distance I have to move the mouse between icons. And that's rubbish. There was a mockup some guy did of a start menu that only covered the left half of the screen. That would be so much better already.
