KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 — Hollywood director Darren Aronofsky's 'Noah', a film loosely based on the prophet venerated by Muslims and Christians has been banned in Malaysia, the Home Ministry confirmed today.
The ministry's Film Censorship Board (LPF) division chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid said the decision was made two weeks ago after the board viewed the film during a private screening together with officials from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim).
“Yes, I can confirm that it has been banned by the board, the movie can cause quite a lot of anger and distress if it is shown in Malaysia,” he told The Malay Mail Online when contacted.
The main reason for the ban, according to Abdul Halim, was Noah's depiction by Hollywood actor Russell Crowe. Islam forbids visual depictions of any prophet.
“It is un-Islamic for anyone to act out any characters of a prophet. If it is an issue to draw pictures of a prophet, what more a movie? Of course this is prohibited, it is prohibited in Islam,” said the LPF head.
Abdul Halim added that the promoters of the film in Malaysia have already been informed of the decision.
The film is said to be based on the biblical story of Noah's Ark and already been reported banned by several Islamic countries including Egypt, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

I don't see how this could come as a surprise to anybody.
What?! The Noachian story is from the Pentateuch..
One of the small collection of books that links Islam, Christianity, and Judaism.
This makes no sense at all....

I think it's the fact that they're depicting prophets which is against Islamic teachings

Those books are like terms and agreements really, no one actually reads them.

It's more because it's a "depiction of a prophet". Islam is a bit touchy about depictions of religious figures, they consider it idolatry to do much of anything more than write their names, so pictures and movies are a big no-no.

Ironic, considering Indonesia's national motto is "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika' which means unity in diversity.

Which is just pathetic beyond all hope. Anyone who gets offended by things on TV or Film in the year 2014 needs to pull their head out of the sand.

Malaysia is a jungle.
They're old traditions carried on because Muhammad said that the worship of idols and prophets rather than God himself is extremely dangerous and consequently told his followers to never show his image so it wouldn't happen to him. A very often cited example - and probably the example Muhammad was referencing there - is Jesus. Muslims believe Jesus is a prophet, not God's son or God himself.
It's a real concern, but they take it to extreme levels, which is a problem.
Oh boy my friend's going to be pissed :v:
How tolerant

He can always come to Singapore and watch the movie here. The movie is thankfully not banned here. We are more liberal than Malaysia but I wouldn't recommend watching it since the movie is full of High fantasy nonsense.

Except Malaysians have to travel down a fucking congested highway just to watch a movie. I think they'll pass.

the true reason Muhammad did that, was to essentially kill the old religions(which relied on idol worship mostly), he basically cleverly came up with a rule to kill a major part of the ritual of the older pagan religions in the area.
A movie about a biblical story gets banned in primarily Islamic countries.
Oh, I'm so shocked and surprised?
Wow I'm not even remotely surprised.
I think the real reason why it was banned was because of the same reason why many christian groups are upset with the movie.
They expected it to be more "true to the original" like Passion of the christ, when it's more like watching the Book of Mormon (minus the comedy). It's the filmmakers own take on the story, it's not following the original version of the story. E.g, Noah is much more of a dark and gritty person in the movie.
reminds me of that one movie "something of christ" it got showed in cinemas in qatar for a while and suddenly the cinema guys were like "OH WAIT THIS A MOVIE ABOUT CHIRSTANS AND SHIT, BETTER REMOVE IT" and every person who did see it laughed at the people who didnt (i think they released it on dvd to stop people who didnt see it get butthurt)
its less idolism and more of "they give a prophet a face" because people worried that if he made him too handsome or too ugly, we got LOADS of movies about Muhammad and other prophets but none of them actually show the prophet in fear of ruining his image
Surprisingly it's not banned down here in pakistan either. At least they aren't doing a good job of enforcing it if it is because many theaters are playing it.
fun fact in the Islamic bible, it actually says to live in peace with christens and to tolerate but that's only one version in the middle east almost each village or town tends to have a different version of it.

its more like live in peace with everybody and make anyone who ruins the earth suffer....too bad idiot extremist switched the two
and fun fact: the person who told that Muhammad is the prophet was a christen and he was still a christen even when he know that the new prophet was right next to him scared because he saw an angel ordering him to read
One fairytale banning another, well i never...

What does that even mean? Literally all of the Book of Mormon is comedy.
The amount of people getting pissed over a made up story is shocking.

Hopefully they don't kill creators of the movie or something.

Can't wait until someone tries to produce a movie based around the prophet Muhammed.
Can't wait until someone tries to produce a movie based around the prophet Muhammed.
it will be ok as long as it doesnt show the prophet muhammed or any of the prophet faces
there are already LOADS of movies based around him and i cant seem to remember the name of the most famous one because they all titled the same
I can't believe these country's are getting angry over a film parody of a fictional story. This is why I dislike religion.

Religion and Politics should never mix. However Islam is different, it is both a religion and a political ideology, hence problems like this.
