Thousands threaten to quit Netflix
Could Netflix's loss be Redbox's gain?
By Athima Chansanchai
If you're a Netflix subscriber, you received a rude awakening today in your inbox when the company announced it would no longer be offering a combined DVD and streaming plan and would instead separate the services, for a minimum cost of about $16 a month if you still want both.
I've been with Netflix since 2000, but only recently downgraded from three DVDs a month to one and unlimited streaming. I got this today:
Your current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:
Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $7.99 a month
Your price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.
These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.
These changes raised the ire of Netflix's fans on Facebook, almost 9,000 of whom stormed onto its page to voice their vehement disapproval. Many of them complained about Netflix's "greed" and said they were going to leave Netflix for Redbox. Other users suggested services like Crackle, Hulu Plus and even Blockbuster.
Here are some excerpts from the Facebook page:
It takes a real genius to destroy a thriving company in a single day.....Congrats Netflix!!!!!
Greedy CEO + a mediocre, slow, limited streaming service + waiting for DVDs in the mail = Many canceled Netflix users and Redbox's Best Day EVER!
This is weeeeaaaaakkkkk!!!! I can't count on one hand how many people I've gotten to join Netflix. This isn't the time to go UP on prices! Let's see what Blockbuster has in stored!
HORRIBLE IDEA. Let's all cancel our plans until they CHANGE IT BACK
Well, I won't be recommending Netflix anymore. If all movies and shows were available no matter which option you chose, then we could choose one or the other. As it is, the customer is in a no-win situation, you have to choose "both" options in order to ensure that you will be able to watch ALL of the movies and series you want. We will be cancelling. Time to go check Hulu.
More than 4,300 have commented on the Netflix blog, and again, reaction seems to be against Netflix, for the most part.
We've reached to Redbox to see if they've gotten any boost from the Netflix move, and Netflix to see if they've received cancellations and if they have any intention to restore the plans in light of such a negative reaction. Subscribers also complained about not being able to reach customer service. We tried too, and weren't able to get through, due to technical problems on their end.
This is not the first time users have expressed their frustration and disappointment with Netflix. In January, we reported how Netflix removed the ability to add DVDs from the streaming sites on game consoles and boxes, and how Netflix played down the negativity.
But it's a much more crowded landscape for streaming video now, and there are thousands on Facebook, at least, that intend to act on their displeasure.
UPDATE: Redbox, which offers movies at $1 apiece for each night checked out, "now has more than 27,000 locations that are within a five minute drive of 60 percent of the U.S. population," shared with us comments from its public Facebook wall that seemed to confirm at least some possible migration from Facebook to Redbox. Here are some:
I am renting 5 tonight just to show you my support and to rebel against Netflix!
wowsah. I bet redbox gets a lot of new customers today.
C'mon Redbox — you need to create a streaming option to supplement your DVD rental business — Netflix's decision today definitely leaves a gaping hole in the market now. Boo Netflix!

TL;DR Netflix wants lodes emone and will be charging separate prices for streaming and dvd rental
So I guess thats the end of them.
Oh noes, a company wants to increase the price of their service!
It makes sense. If you're using more, then you gotta pay more.

Also, that's not news. It's a terribly written opinion piece.

The second source is straight from netflix, with the price increases/reasons listed
60% price increase sure is a great marketing move
Welp. I hope something comes around and puts redbox out of the industry just like Blockbuster put out mom and pop video stores.
they can fuck off honestly, i sent a gift to a friend and it didnt let him activate the gift untill they charged HIM more money, so the gift just ran down, unusable.
also they remove movies and shows from instant so much its ridiculous.
Wow, I just started using netflix this month due to the amazing prices. They can suck my left nut. $7 more is a lot for the amount that I use it.
I think this is the stupidest decision they are making. Why change something that isn't broken?
I think this is the stupidest decision they are making. Why change something that isn't broken?
Because prolly posting DVDs to people isn't really profitable?
Why change something that isn't broken?
this is the stupidest saying ever, stop using it
I don't see a problem unless you use both services and I'm thinking you mostly (if not only) use the streaming service of which you're then getting a discount of $2!
whats funny is they take shows off the streaming and then make them dvd only.
What does this mean to the Xbox Live and PS3 users? No streaming unless you pay for their Umlimited Streaming plan? I pay $60 a year for Xbox Live, I don't want to pay an additional fee a month just to watch movies.
Netflix is a terrible service, I was planning on canceling it anyway.
Everyone acts like Netflix is god-tier, not sure why
An extra 60$ is the price of a new retail game. I dunno bout you, but I've gotten lots of hours outta netflix.
Lol people fail to realize that they wouldn't raise the prices unless they were losing money.

Its all about redbox, why pay 7 dollars to rent a movie for 5 days, when you can pay 1 dollar for one day.
Fucking bullshit. I've loved Netflix, but if they pull this shit I'm going to be pissed. I use the stream every day and frequently order the DVDs they don't stream.
I'm going to tell you right now, they don't stream near enough to even consider paying 8$ for their streaming service. And I'm sure as hell not paying 8$ a month for one DVD at a time when I can walk down the road and rent almost anything I want for 99 cents anytime I want.
Fuck that bullshit.

You don't get Netflix free on the 360, you have to already have the paid Netflix service and an account to link it with to use the Xbox Netflix service.
We still have the original subscription for 2 dvd's a month for 5 dollars a month. I'll have to check if they'll cancel it finally.
On a side note, wouldn't it make more sense to have a combined reduce price for the package? Like 14 instead of 16? Makes for better marketting.

And what happens when you watch all the movies in the redbox? Or you want a more varied selection? Netflix has a massive selection, and for me, it is the only way to get movies.
I may be a tad biased though... The nearest redbox is a half an hour drive away. Going 60 down the highway.
i have to pay $8 more for hours of entertainment :((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

I understand them raising prices, but if a company does that, they have to do it gradually, not just suddenly double the amount you have to pay.

What did you expect from a company that was made by a science teacher from Minnesota?
I think that is who made it...
[editline]12th July 2011[/editline]
nevermind, just googled it.

I was wrong.

I'd gladly pay $16/mo if I could afford it but I can't and the same goes for a lot of people.
You guys do know that if you use one then just use one. Streaming is just more convenient.
