I am about to move, and cannot find an ISP in the area I am moving to. I will be moving to Bahama, N.C. (area code 27503)
My father is down there right now and says that others are using either dialup, or satellite internet. I won't be able to live with dialup, so unless I can find an ISP I will go with satellite internet.
I have checked some ISP's, but they don't go to my area.
I have checked out WildBlue for Satellite internet, but their highest plan still isn't enough (will settle for it if I can't find anything else)
I have heard Hughesnet sucks, but I will be checking into it.
Can anyone help?
3g internet would probably be a better idea then satellite.
3G internet can be pretty good. A friend has a Rogers Rocket Hub (3G modem / Wifi router combo) and gets about 7 Mbps down and a decent latency (Usually 30ms higher than my cable). The big problem is data caps, which will be problematic regardless of satellite or 3G. Gaming on 3G is possible, though it's out of the question for satellite (500-1000ms latency) unless you're playing something turn based (Worms Reloaded for example).
EDIT: Verizon has 3G (LTE nearby) in your area, it's 10 GB for $80 and $10/GB after you go over.
I never thought about 3g. Any other companies than Verizon to check into? 10GB per month is not nearly enough for me
You can forget about gaming if you're going to get satellite internet. Satellite internet is designed for general purpose internet use (web browsing, downloading, email, etc.) gaming will get destroyed on it.
The way satellite internet works is that it's only one way (a direct beam of information to you IE. it acts as your download trunk.) You still require dialup for the upload side of the connection, which games use the most of. The problem is though, that games also use the download side to receive data from servers, this is where the problem comes in.
The satellite data feed you get is not real-time. Basically what happens is the satellite box receives data and fills up a buffer on the receiver box, and then sends it to your computer. This process can take up to a few seconds, which would equate to well over 1000ms lag on Source, making the game unplayable.
If you don't fancy games, you can get satellite, but I wouldn't touch that awful tech with a ten foot pole.

Sprint has the same 10 GB plan, though unlimited 4G (Which you won't have), though the data overages are 25 cents a MB.
