• Nvidia display driver stopped working and successfully recovered

This just started happening like yesterday for no apparent reason. My screen goes black for about four seconds and my sound fucks up and when it returns to normal it says "nvidia display driver stopped working and successfully recovered". When I try to play a game I get horrid artifacting and lag and then it crashes or bluescreens. I have an Nvidia 8800 and I run Windows 7. Speak of the devil... it's an issue with NVLDDMKM, NVidia Longhorn Display Driver Model Kernel Mode. I read somewhere that the issue is with updating drivers. For some reason it doesn't copy over a new version of nvlddmkm.sys, so you have a 2009 driver trying to communicate with a 2006 nvlddmkm.sys (in some cases). The solution is to manually expand and copy over a new version of nvlddmkm.sy_ from the driver folder.
When I try to expand.
nvlddmkm.sy_ is not located in your user directory, you need to go to C:\NVIDIA\WinVista\ but first make sure that you go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers in explorer and rename nvlddmkm.sys to nvlddmkm.sys.old DON'T DELETE IT! then you want to move into the expand.exe stage: so first type in "cd C:\NVIDIA\WinVista" (without quotes) then "dir". There should be a number there, mine is 182.50. now type in "cd 182.50", "dir" now there should only be one language, mine being english. so type in "cd English" you are now in the directory with nvlddmkm.sy_, so run expand.exe, then back in explorer, copy the newly expanded system file (it will show up as nvlddmkm.sys) to C:\Windows\System32\drivers note that you may need to right click -> run as administrator when running expand.exe
It didn't do anything. Still doing the same thing.
It didn't do anything. Still doing the same thing.
you restarted after you did this, correct? and did you update get the latest version of the drivers?
Yes.
Yes.
I remember I had the same issue, but the expanding fix held up for a little while... the only way I managed to fix it was to get a new GTX260. I havn't had the issue since (I used to have a set of 8600GTS's that would always return nvlddmkm)

It seems to be a consistent problem with older 8800 Nvidia cards. From my experience it's probably dead and you should check to make sure if you have any warranties on it.
Same thing happened when my 8800GTX finally kicked the bucket. You could try it in another PC to be sure, but I think it's dead. Fortunately, if you bought it from evga or xfx, I think you'll have a lifetime warranty.
This is quite strange. So I go out and get a pizza and return home and I boot up the computer to reinstall Windows 7 and the problem is gone. Just like that it disappeared. I played two rounds of Red Orchestra on the highest settings and resolution with no problem.
It seems like so many people's 8800s are dying lately, mine died yesterday.

It wouldn't suprise me if they started including things that broke parts after a few years, forcing you to upgrade :v:
It seems like so many people's 8800s are dying lately, mine died yesterday.
So did mine the day before yesterday, it's bluescreening and artifacting like fuck for no reason.
