The Police told the gunman to drop his weapons. He did not comply, and kept approaching the Police unit. Then, he was shot in the left foot once with a MP5 submachine gun. He fell over and was given first aid and taken to the hospital. The bullet did not hit bone. He had a start pistol and a knife. A Baton and a hunting knife were attached to him with zip ties, hidden under his clothes. On Monday, a Police Prosecutor will decide if the policeman will be charged with a crime.
Original source: http://www.iltalehti.fi/uutiset/2013060917130457_uu.shtml I really like how the law treats policemen...
I really like how the law treats policemen...
That is entirely standard, stop being so dramatic. Every time a policeman discharges his weapon at someone in most western countries there is always a review into the incident.
He refused to drop the gun, didnt cease coming towards the officer and was then shot as he continued to pose a considerable threat. The policeman did the right thing.
I really like how the law treats policemen...
What's wrong with it? Pretty much all western countries immediately take police officers off duty after a shooting for a mandatory review
Glad they shot him in the foot.
So police follows procedure and might get charged for it? Why?
I really like how the law treats policemen...
Procedure, procedure. [editline]10th June 2013[/editline]
So police follows procedure and might get charged for it? Why?
"Will decide if". If he did follow procedure, he won't be charged. Simple as that.
I don't mind a story where cops did their job well but why exactly did they have to specify it was a MP5? There was a single shot fired and it hit the dude's foot. Also how did the bullet not hit bone, there's quite a lot of it in your foot?
Procedure, procedure. [editline]10th June 2013[/editline] "Will decide if". If he did follow procedure, he won't be charged. Simple as that.
Well, there IS a history of Finnish policemen getting charged for stuff like this - I hope this doesn't go so far.
and here i was expecting a story about american cops blowing some dude away
Well, there IS a history of Finnish policemen getting charged for stuff like this - I hope this doesn't go so far.
It wont, the police did exactly as he should've. All of this is really just standard procedure.
Glad they shot him in the foot instead of the head like most cops would.
The guy didn't pose an immediately fatal threat, but probably enough of a threat they didn't want to get close enough to taser or pepper spray him. That having been said, I thought the range on tasers is something like 20 feet, which would seem like it's enough if the dude was just walking rather than running towards the officers.
Like this way of handling things tbh. instead of shooting things dead everyone deserves a chance of life even if they did something outrageously stupid.
Glad they shot him in the foot instead of the head like most cops would.
Bad idea though, even if it would save lives, if the guy decided to charge suddenly, center mass is the only place you'd have a chance of hitting.
From a self defense standpoint shooting an armed individual anywhere other than the torso is a bad idea but I guess it worked out alright here
Nothing to see here, proper police work all the way.
What the fuck do you expect them to do? Piss on the guy until he is annoyed enough to drop his FUCKING GUN AND KNIFE?
Also we don't know if the cop wasn't aiming for center mass, he could just be an awful shot and it worked out in their favor. It happens. v:v:v
Glad they shot him in the foot instead of the head like most cops would.
Nobody shoots for the head, too hard to hit. Always trained to aim for center of mass. ie the chest. Don't know why he went for the foot actually...
Also we don't know if the cop wasn't aiming for center mass, he could just be an awful shot and it worked out in their favor. It happens. v:v:v
"Fuck I missed! I..um, I mean, I meant to get his foot. Yeah, that's right."
Nobody shoots for the head, too hard to hit. Always trained to aim for center of mass. ie the chest. Don't know why he went for the foot actually...
Because he didn't want to kill a man?
Glad they shot him in the foot instead of the head like most cops would.
You're supposed to shoot them in the central body area, since there's more body mass. That means if the shot was off it might still hit the person, plus, you're more likely to hit an organ and stop the danger
Also, nowhere does it say he "charged" towards them. It only says he approached them.
Nobody shoots for the head, too hard to hit. Always trained to aim for center of mass. ie the chest. Don't know why he went for the foot actually...
UK police under Operation Kratos (though they changed the name after the 2005 shooting) will aim for the head, but that's only used against suspected suicide bombers. Same goes for Russia, Israel and Sri Lanka. I'm glad that no-one died here though, the police officer did his job, and the review will hopefull find him in the right.
Wow, that's a really bad headline. Why is it so intentionally ambiguous?
Nobody shoots for the head, too hard to hit. Always trained to aim for center of mass. ie the chest. Don't know why he went for the foot actually...

Because he didn't want to kill a man?
No such thing as a safe disabling shot, not even if you hit someone in the butt (which is full of fat tissue). I wonder if he did actually go for the foot; a small, fast-moving target compared to the torso doesn't exactly sound like the most secure way to take down someone armed with a firearm himself. I mean I'm glad everything worked out for the best in the end, but what if the police man missed the shot and the guy returned fire and hit? Heck even when hit in the foot there's a chance the guy will muster up enough adrenaline to open fire himself. I guess all that "if you pull the trigger, do it only to kill" talk doesn't completely apply to reality after all.
Nobody shoots for the head, too hard to hit. Always trained to aim for center of mass. ie the chest. Don't know why he went for the foot actually...
Us europeans dont really try to kill people alot. If they don't go down the first shot then the police will do a killing shot. Instead of just killing them straight. Sweden and Denmark has done this alot recently and it worked. A bullet in the kneecap makes them realise they are fucking up. If you keep going after a bullet in the kneecap then. Yeah.
Wow. Shots aimed at non-vital parts of the body with the intent to disable rather than kill. What a novel idea. US should consider this idea next time they put 25 bullets into a guy wielding a butter knife.
Why don't you come to my range and we'll see if you can hit a foot-sized moving target with an MP5 from 25 feet away?
Why don't you come to my range and we'll see if you can hit a foot-sized moving target with an MP5 from 25 feet away?
Or you can empty the entire mag into his legs. I doubt he'll still be a ''threat'' after that.
Or you can empty the entire mag into his legs. I doubt he'll still be a ''threat'' after that.
Or you could just shoot for the torso like you're supposed to
