I want to put together a small home game server for hosting Minecraft and Killing Floor and stuff and i'm not really sure where I should start. I'm looking for any help I can get.
Do you have any old computers lying around? If you do, please post the specs as you may be able to use one for the servers. It doesn't have to be super powerful. The main concern is your internet connection. Most ISPs don't allow you to host servers using a residential connection. While they probably won't notice, it's something to keep in mind. What kind of speeds are you getting? You'll need at least 2-3Mbps upload to host a couple small servers.
Now that I think about it someone was saying that the school literally just puts "free" signs on old computers after they take out ram and hard drives so i'll go talk to the guy who told me that and see what I can scavenge together.
Any old Pentium 4 rig should do you just fine. You'll want at least 1GB of ram. You'll be best off running some flavor of Linux.
CentOS is a pretty good server distro from what I gather. Personally, I used Ubuntu Server for a few months and didn't really see anything wrong with it.
Debian + 2.8GHz Celeron D + 1gb ram = Fine 10 player minecraft server [editline]30th March 2011[/editline] Just make sure you dont install the graphical desktop thing

I have an old pentium D, 4gb of ram.. Also, you can use Speedtest.net to check your speeds. I just did mine. Off of wifi(im on my laptop) i got 13.57 Down and 4.17 up.

Pentium D should be fine those speeds aren't that bad, either, you could probably host one with a decent amount of players.

The Pentium 4 is a pretty weak processor to be using for a Source server. A 24 man TF2 server will use 80-90% CPU time on a 2.8 GHz P4 fully loaded and people will be lagging pretty bad. The internet connection can handle 62 players if the server is configured properly, but to give some leeway, I'd say 32 max.
