The costume is for the character Maui, a demigod in Polynesian mythology who is voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the film. The outfit, available on Disney’s online store, consists of a brown bodysuit with tattoos and an “island-style” skirt. It comes with“photorealistic teeth art appliqués” and “padded chest, shoulders, and calves,” promoting lazy stereotypes. Many are calling the costume racist. “Our brown skin/ink’s not a costume,” one critic tweeted in response. “Cosplaying shouldn’t be limited to what [your] race is. But literally wearing a brown skin costume? No,” wrote a third person. “Really, who (from Disney) thought a ‘brown skin’ costume would be a good thing?” asked NPR’s Kat Chow.
Sourced from TIME. For more direct outrage from those having issue, peek at The Daily Dot, if you dare. The costume has since been recalled from Disney's direct stores. I can understand how a connection can be made between "fake dark-colored skin garments" and "blackface", but man, this film is already being heated by social activists for making the male character on the large side, but with things like this, this film is going to spark as much controversey with minorities as it tries to solve by giving them center stage.
This is so stupid my face caved in from the cringe.
In my opinion, the only reason why blackface is still offensive is because people are clinging to the old racist usage
the only racists I see are the people bringing race into it in the first place
it's a pretty dumb costume though
I don't understand why the skin color has to be apart of the costume. Probably should've gone with Moana costumes instead of Maui.
undeniably racist
I don't understand why the skin color has to be apart of the costume. Probably should've gone with Moana costumes instead of Maui.
Not sure how they could have made a padded "naked" torso piece without having it be a certain skin color.
Not sure how they could have made a padded "naked" torso piece without having it be a certain skin color.
Not to mention it needs all the tattoos
Can't wait for the part where little kids get called Racist for dressing up as Moana herself.
I don't understand why the skin color has to be apart of the costume. Probably should've gone with Moana costumes instead of Maui.
How else are you supposed to do a costume thats just skin, tattoos, and a leaf dress? Fairy farts and pixie dust?
I'm not a costume designer, man. Just saying that there could possibly have been some alternatives to trying to make a costume of a shirtless dude in the first place? Idk.
I'm not a costume designer, man. Just saying that there could possibly have been some alternatives to trying to make a costume of a shirtless dude in the first place? Idk.
There are not many alternative clear and breathable fabrics that are still cheap enough to mass-market to little kids anyway. Would it have been considered racist if a paler kid used a spray-on tanner to more resemble a character with a darker tone in order to closer match the character's appearance? It's no more racist than Adam Savage painting his skin red when he cos-plays Hell Boy.
I don't see any really, maybe a transparent shirt with tattoos printed on? That would look like shit though. I just don't get the controversy. The fake skin on that costume is kinda tanned, whoop dee doo. How the hell is that racist? Should they have made it pasty white instead? That's like saying those skin-colored leggings are racist if they imitate darker skin. Just, what?

skin is racist

I wouldn't be surprised if they pull all plans for Maui appearing in the theme parks as well because of this.

It wouldn't bother me seeing a kid wear it but then again I'm not Polynesian so.

I think it'd be cool for them to sell like really big temporary tattoos of those designs. Would be kind of a hassle for kids though probably lol.
It's a costume for a character who has dark skin, I don't see the problem?
I find news like this funny because I see some racism in the whole concept of saying "You can't be my skin color because you're another skin color". It's a really petty thing to get upset about, because all it shows is you identify too much with your skin type to a rather unhealthy degree. Of course stereotypical caricatures of a race are always going to be blatantly racist and should be called out. (Squinty Asian eye buck teeth white guy.)

It's admirable to be racially colorblind enough to equate blackface with redface, but I can be pretty sure that actual people of color won't feel the same way you do. I get why you'd think otherwise, but racist intent is one thing, and how people respond to it is another. Things can be racist without malicious intent. [t]https://blackhistorycollection.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/dsc00578.jpg[/t] These were sold in America until the 90s. It's a dumb stretch to say everyone making and buying them was a racist, a lot of old people thought it was a cute cartoon, but it definitely didn't help things. Same argument in OP, to a lesser extent. While dangerously close to "ur a white male!!" territory, it's important to remember that just because you (speaking generally, not you) don't find something offensive, doesn't mean nobody else should be offended by it. That's been a common argument from people with nothing to be offended by, and while there's a lot of dumb outrage shit today, everybody has their own experiences. I'll admit that's completely irrelevant to OP though, that's exactly how the character is designed and there's no way around it in a costume.
I think it'd be cool for them to sell like really big temporary tattoos of those designs. Would be kind of a hassle for kids though probably lol.
that would be a huge hassle and cost way more money to make and not look right
idgi so would a black kid wearing this [t]https://images-mm.s3.amazonaws.com/BSS_800865_POP.jpg[/t] be considered racist? (edited for better example)
It's this slogan all over again.
undeniably racist
I had this costume, and I'm Japanese American
The character has dark skin in the movie, right? What were they meant to do, give the costume lighter skin? Then it's not the same character. It's a costume of a specific character from the movie, there's absolutely zero racism or racist intent going on here. How is this even a thing, bloody hell. I think everyone's just a bit too wound up these days, this is madness.
