And then you look at places like Japan and Korea that have gigabit connections.

This is the average not the max.
Just 3 years ago the average internet connection speeds:
South Korea 12Mbps
Hong Kong 9Mbps
Japan 7.8Mbps
Romania 6.3Mbps
Latvia 6.3Mbps
Sweden 6.1Mbps
Netherlands 5.9Mbps
Czech Republic 5.4Mbps
Denmark 5.3Mbps
Switzerland 5.2Mbps

why do they always use megabits?
why not megaBYTES per second, like steam etc
it's so much easier

Bigger numbers look better to advertise.

It's to do with how data is send down the line.
Good I guess. I was looking forward to our town getting fibre however the cabinet for our house is quite far away so we can only get 14.8Mbps (estimate). Only BT will sell it to us as our current ISP can only let people upgrade if they reach a minimum of 15Mbps, absolute bullshit. We're stuck on a 5Mb connection until our contract runs out so we can switch.
I have been getting 11MB/s dl from Steam at my uni since September. Apparently in the newer buildings you can get 40MB/s, although that may be megabits.
and still those who are connected directly to the exchange (means we cannot get FTTC) or not in a cabled area are stuck on ADSL.
Estimated time until FTTH... 2018 and estimated time until Virgin Media cable is installed... 2024 and I live in central London... Thankfuly I'm moving house soon and will make sure that where I move has either FTTC/H and/or cable.
Until then though I'm stuck on shitty ADSL and sub 2008 speeds

...You call 18 megabits a second bad?! Shit son.

Dude wtf how do you even.... in London.... You really should think about changing to a different ISP mate. See if you can get Fibre services with BT (you can check on there website), and if you cannot try see if you can get Virgin Media. If you can't get either change to Plus Net or something, you should be getting faster speeds than that. Also try changing your ADSL filter as they do commonly break and often give you those sorts of speeds. You should be getting AT LEAST 12mb in or around London on ADSL
and yet I still haven't got BT infinity...

Data transfers have been denoted in bits per second for decades. Storage is bytes. It's just how it works, not even related to advertising.

"Faster than 58% of GB"
Yeah quit whining.
Your speed is over twice the speed of mine, and I'm still faster than 66% of Aus.
woot woot 3 Mb/s. Reppin'.
Had 0.3 Mbps earlier. Slower than 99% of GB. :C
Trying to find the speedtest.net result pic

I'm not in London. I'm in Wales.
hmm, i dont know why denmarks average connection speed is listed as 5.3
Seems like it should be higher.
Heres mine, and its pretty affordable.

I knew this was gonna be a "I post my bandwidth to brag by saying how shit it is" thread before I clicked it.
You stupid robot posters.
Yeah but what's the point when it's throttled for 75% of the day and is absolutely god awful for hosting anything game related? And their router software, oh my god it's the worst thing. If the router isn't reset daily it just ends up hanging and becomes inaccessible.

We've had maybe 1 period of downtime with Sky Broadband since 2006, but Virgin? I'm lucky to go 2 weeks without some sort of outage, and forget getting compensated for any of those.

Just get a different router then maybe?
No point in wasting money on a student accommodation.

Aus has an 8Mbit average speed, which is kind of low. Sure my speeds are good, but it is expensive, as well as I am the only person who seems to be able to get these speeds in my neighborhood.
An average speed of 12Mbps is actually pretty good, that is about 1.5MB/s, which isn't so bad.

Although it is almost 3 in the morning :v:
The big issue is its really only the infrastructure in the last mile (the part from the data-center to the client), If you rent a server or colo, and speed-test, you get amazing ping and amazing bandwidth: , but the most I can get with Comcast is 100Mbit, for $300/mo

Honestly, having this kind of connection is half useless, torrents rarely go above 2MB/s, Steam never goes above 4MB/s and direct downloads are still slow as balls.
have you checked http://servicestatus.sky.com/serviceupdates/ to see if your exchange is congested? when storys started surfacing a month or so back about slow service sky seemed pretty quick to respond and add more capacity where needed
holy shit can i come stay at your house
Not my house, a server I have in Virginia.
Although, You can get gigabit connection about 30 miles north of where I live, for a fairly cheap fee, Check out Centerville / UTOPIA if you live in Utah.
But yeah, It's nice having a gigabit connection.
